wanting to replace the wood grain trim.
I want to replace my wood grain trim, cracking on some areas, saw some carbon fiber ones, looked good but have not seen a company out there that sells them, I do not know if that was a BMW option, just wanting to make the X5 look good again.....:D

Probably trims that were recovered by owner with carbon fiber film or they are after market trims. Only non wood trim that is OEM is the Black Piano trim which I have on my X.
|
There is also the aluminum OEM trim.

Or you could do the AC Schnitzer carbon fiber trim for 3500$

I've been playing around with putting 3M 1080 Vinyl Wrap on my steering wheel trim, door pull trim and a few other parts. It's not as easy as it looks on Youtube, but if you take your time and practice a bit it's not bad. If you don't want metallic or CF, they have about a zillion other options too. I'm not a huge fan of the carbon fiber look, so I've been using the black brushed aluminum and I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

Leather wrap interior trim. Just done it on my M5.

My dream is to find a complete Imola Red Leather interior that I can afford, but in the meantime, covering my wood with red leather sounds just kinky enough. |

One day I hope to find OEM E39 Black leather trim in Europe, funny how I've found every color BUT black. |

As for vinyl wrapping. The wife and did carbon fiber in our X and love it. Did as good a job as that guy who's asking $550+. It's not easy, but it's not hard either. Get yourself some film... it's like $30 for enough to do your trim a few times and see what you can do. As mentioned, it comes in a million different flavors... just make sure to get the "breathable" ones or whatever as they are higher end and are much better quality. The $10 ones are garbage. |
Does anyone have a line on an argyle or plaid vinyl? I can't seem to find either of those, but I probably just don't know what I am looking for. Just curious to see what is out there for other patterns.

Don't have pic of the finished product yet. This was in the middle of it. I'll post updated pic soon.

So just wrap the wood trim adds enough contrast and specializes the interior enough. This is the 2-tone I did on my old 540i MSport http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps0c7a4a91.png http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps65d613b8.jpg |

Tam, love the red on the E39 man.
The E39 center console is slightly easier to wrap than the E53 center console, but its not an easy job to look good, so far yours looks awesome! The E53 console is a bitch with all the complex curves and shapes, so leather is a good choice since it has some stretch. Personally I got rid of the wood with a OEM aluminum trim set off German Ebay for $220, was all in perfect shape. The sets for sale here in the states are ridiculously overpriced. If I could find a trims set brand new though it would be Cosmoschwarz, I love my aluminum for contrast but Black trims just look so bad ass on a sport interior. |
Here's the finished product. I'm quite happy since leather trim is only available on "Individual" pkg. Not too much red and give the interior some needed contrast. The texture on the leather matches the dash and door top perfectly.
