Im still trying to fix my start up rattle on my 2001 4.4 e53 with 133,000 miles

I have Replaced the tensioner and made sure the oil is topped off.

It only rattle after about 3 hours of being shut down. Im 2000 miles in on the 0 w 40 oil.

I read here that you can fix it by switching to 15 w 50
I live in south washingtion and the winters never get below 25 degrees usally about 50 degrees

That oil would be too thick. I would try 10W-40 before going 15W-50.

Would it be to thick even if I let it warm up befor driving. Im really hoping this is the fix im looking for

You're wasting your time trying different oils, the rattle you're are hearing is called Vaonos rattle. Do a search hear or on Google and you'll find tons of info about this subject. The only way to permanently get rid of the noise is to rebuild the units and install the new improved seals or buy new aftermarket units with the improved seals already installed. The noise doesn't hurt anything and BMW was well aware of the problem in the late 90's, it affects mostly the V8 engines. If you replace VANOS units I would also replace the little oil anti-drainback valves, replacing them alone though will not fix the problem. By the way my X5 has that noise also, but it runs perfectly fine with over 200K on the odometer.

The noise is really annoying me. I couldnt hurt to try right?

Have you ever used anything thinker then 5w30?

I think the early M62 may have similar crank bearing clearances as the S62, which requires a 10W60 oil for proper crank bearing clearances. For this reason with the success of the 15W50, even in cold starts, I'll run a 10W60 during the Summer months.

M1 15W50, give it a shot. No more water like oils for me. I like for the engine to be smooth like butter.

I've tried Mobil 1 10w-30, 10w-40, and 0w-40, nothing worked, I even had new ant-drainback valves installed when I had the timing chain guides replaced, nothing worked. Your only option is to rebuild/replace the VANOS units, and they're not cheap. The rattle open happens at startup, so to be honest it doesn't bother me.

I that rattle was a combo of the vanos and the chain slapping
