X5 engine oil

Hi, I'm confused about selecting correct engine oil for my 2003 x5 3.0d, have read several posts but still no definite answer, any help will be very welcome. 😊

If you have your owner's manual, it'll be there.

IIRC LL-01 or LL-04 is recommended

Riggodeaux 01-08-2015 10:28 AM

I believe some of our Aussie posters have posted their oil preferences for the diesel six. Suggest a search for 'diesel' and perhaps the LL01 or other engine oil criteria [brand names, castrol for example?] if you can't locate an owners' manual.

kgbboris 01-08-2015 12:21 PM

as above it is ment to be bmw specific LL-04 oil, I use PETRONAS syntium 5w30 low ash oil as that's what we use where I work at fiat and is also ll-04 grade how ether you can use other grades as long as its turbo diesel approved as I had this discussion in another thread and some were using grades such as 0w40 etc but id stick to the 5w30 fully synthetic ll-04 stuff if it was me, my local bmw main dealer said to use 5w30 castrol magnatec

white46 01-08-2015 01:35 PM

I thought LL-01 is for gas and LL-04 is for diesel.

Nulon 5/30 long life diesel oil. Meets LL04 req's.

You are thinking of North America.

5pterson 01-09-2015 03:06 AM

Yes, any approved BMW longlife 01 and 04 will work fine. Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge are some of your options.

THE VEIN 01-09-2015 08:10 AM

LL04 is for cars using European gas

kgbboris 01-09-2015 08:21 AM

BMW LL04 engine oil is a longlife engine oil required for petrol engine BMWs and diesel engine BMWs with soot filters (diesel particulate filters) from 2004 onwards. LL04 engine oil can also be used on older BMWs in place of Longlife-01, Longlife-98 and BMW Spezial approval.

Hi, thankyou all for your advice/input, I had a read of manual and it said,,preferred bmw longlife 01, so I searched online bmw LL 01 and to my surprise most off the listings were Mobil 1, I was expecting to see castrol as that is what is printed on my oil filler cap, so after much deliberation I narrowed it down to Mobil 1 5/30 or castrol edge 5/30 as 5pterson has suggested, is 5/30 the preferred ratio.

Ended up going on castrol website and they recommended castrol edge 0w30 so that is what I ended up buying, regarding the breather vortex replacement I bought the upgrade but am a little concerned about the seating off the breather part, is it correct that it is just pushed into place and held with a o ring,

A bit late too this :(

The vortex is just pushed into place and can only be fitted one way.The 2 bolts that then secure the case will also hold the filter in place.Just make sure the "o" ring is in place as per pic(right) below

You should always go by what Bmw recommends and never by oil companies, especially on their websites, which can be wrong and misleading!
I had a look at the Castrol UK website and do they do indeed recommend 0w 30 for the 3.0D 2001-03 ,but then they also recommend the same for all other X5s,including the 3.0i!!!!They have a selection for you to choose a 3.0D 2001-03 with DPF..WHAT!!!!The 3.0D never had one!
Then they also state 6.5 litres ,for all X5s .which we all know is wrong!

Regarding the LL01 and LL04 ,both mean Longlife ,with the LL04 having a lower SAPS content which was made to be more suitable for DPF cars.
In non DPF cars ,you can use both!

Thanks mate, think I might go back to toilet roll type and change it every air filter change, iv now put a video on YouTube titled bmw e53 ticking noise, I'm probably wrong but got feeling it's coming from the silver/chrome thing in the video.

Well ,thats a pretty good video and I can hear what is more of tapping noise between 0,48 and 0,54.
Thats a strong noise ,like something cracked or an exhaust gasket went.
A loose bolt or screw would also make that noise.
Maybe a tappet as I said before.Maybe also be an injector knocking noise.

Have you verified all the bolts and everything you did on the oil change?
Did you reconnect the oil breather pipe to the airbox?

That chrome /silver part is your vaccum pump, and that naturally makes a small ticking noise as its producing vacuum?
Have you noticed any performance drop after oil change?

Have you checked that you didnt loose any tools or dropped any bolts somewhere ,when you did the oil change?

Leeg 01-24-2015 01:42 PM

I did loose extension bar at 1 point but retrieved it after about 1 hour off looking, been and checked and double checked bolts are present and done up, if it was something rattling or catching on something that I over looked wouldn't it do It when car is cold also, think I might have too just admit defeat and take it to a Indy garage, I really hate using garages the ones you can 100% trust are few and far between let alone finding the fault first time.. :)

oldskewel 01-24-2015 04:14 PM

Sounds to me like the fan is ticking against something - based on the frequency, and how it would get louder when you got closer to the fan.

Leeg 01-24-2015 06:50 PM

Yes my first thought was something touching fan but can't see anything and it would do it even when first start up I assume.
Rob, when you say oil breather do you mean the plastic air intake that goes to the air filter, if yes that was connected I just disconnected for video because noise is bit louder without it on. I even resorted to talking to it today, ha, I said show me were your problem is and I'll give you good buff and polish. Still nothing, :)

Been on it again today, took everything off that and replaced breather with original, all bolts, screws, hex,s were all there and tight, had really good look in engine bay with torch and didn't see anything suspect, done the screwdriver listening thing, tried stopping fan but didn't seem to want to so I didn't push my luck, (if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck:dunno:) put back the bits/bobs not 100% but I'm sure it's bit quieter now, going to try find a good mechanic, any recormendations the southwest uk please let me no.

Sorry about my grammar it's not my iPad its me I just can't spell.:p:
Thankyou all again for help/advice with this issue, if/wen ever a club meet I'll ow few people a beer.

Nothing in Somerset ,but I can recommend someone in Stroud (about 1 hour drive)that I do remaps for and has excellent facilities and is a pro.
Ask for Dan Turner and say Fernando sent you,or just give speak to him and he may give his opinion on your ticking noise

Cool thanks, will give them call and have chat,in the mean time I'm hoping iv done the right thing (probably not nowing me, ha.) service 2... I think it was mentioned in a previous comment or I'm going mad) use 0w40 bit thicker oil as its quite high mileage or somthing to that affect, SO went out and got Mobil 1 0w40 turbo diesel oil, new toilet roll type breather filter, and new oil filter, after doing another service took her for drive and vast improvement, seems to drive better, engine just seemed to like it better and it has reduced the ticking a lot, still have a little bit but no were near as much,
People are going to want to shoot me soon, should I off gone 5w30. Speaking to a bmw parts guy today when picked up filters and he said use 0w40 also he also said years ago the x5,s were run on 10w40 and I could even go down that root, MAN IM SO OIL CONFUSED.COM....
