Bluetooth Telephone BMW E53 X5 2005

Hi all

Apologies if this has been discussed and I have searched and read a few threads but just looking for further advise.

Having bought the above car and fixing the small niggles these cars have. I am now working on fixing the Bluetooth pairing issue I have.

I have tried all combinations of trying to get the car to show pairing (holding the center console button and IGN 1 and 2) but it always say's activate phone and nothing is appearing on the phone. I have tried 3 different phones.

I have also used the BMW Scanner software are cleared the current sync'd handsets and also tried pairing through the software where you enable pairing and nothing.

I took it to a local specialist who checked all connections and concluded it is the Bluetooth module that has gone.

So I looked in the back and saw the silver unit bolted in at a angle which I removed on the side next to the SAT NAV, CD player etc. However I am confused is this the unit that needs replacing and is the ULF or is this what they call a TCU and if so is there somewhere else I should be looking. I have included a few pictures of the silver unit. Also looked on ebay and they seem to look a lot squarer in dimensions then what I have.

Many thanks

Just take off the part number from the unit and Google it.

That's the correct shape of the part. Did you follow the instructions in the manual for pairing? I seem to remember I did it off the steering wheel on my 2005. There's a chance that your TCU went bad and was replaced with a non-Bluetooth TCU. There is a pdf out there where you can compare your part number to list of working ones.

Ditto above...the older units are referred to as ULF....but from the Oct/2004 build date up...if you have BMW ASSIST or the premium pkg...then you got the newer TCU unit (with voice recognition) which you pair by following the instructions below. You will need the PK code (pass key code) from off the module...and this is what you enter into your smart phone once you've opened it's BLUETOOTH setting to find your X5. You have two minutes once you've turned the ignition to position 2...when you go to your smart phone to search for BT compatible devices...your X5 should appear as "BMW_ _ _ _ _" where the blank spaces are the last 5 digits of your VIN.

Select your X5 when it appears on the list on your smart phone...then enter the PK code.

Tips (aka what I did):
  • KL R = ignition position 1 & KL 15 = ignition position 2(position 2 worked for me)
  • I never saw "Bluetooth pairing" on the Nav screen...I just went to my smart phone and searched for new devices...and saw BMW24133 (which is specific to my X5 because it's the last 5 digits of my VIN)
  • I then selected BMW24133 and was asked to enter my 5 digit PK code
  • Then I saw "paired" appear on my smart phone below the BMW24133
  • I then shut the ignition off and waited 30 seconds

Hi Thanks for the posts. On the device its as BT written on it and also

84.10 6964113 - 02
232925 23
USA 29.03.2005
Motorola symbol
then BMW everest IBUS ECE
IMEI xxxxxxxxx
PK xxxx

Also it states NAD: This device TCU1p03BT FCC ID: IHDT6EM1 IC:1090-6EM1

I used the bmw scanner to clear the 4 units that where already paired. I also tried the clicking the pairing button in the software but nothing happens.

What does confuse me is on a VIN check the Car market is Europa but on the unit its says BT device it says USA 29.03.2005. this could be like mentioned a replacement unit.

BMW Assist does appear on the MID as well.

I think i also need to take the arm rest up and see if there is any broken wires on the button in the console. The BMW scanner software also brings two errors as follows

Prefit SIM denied in the network
I-Bus access error

I would look up your vin number and check the build sheet. Perhaps another owner tried to install the Bluetooth and never got it to work. Do your build sheet list the following options?

If you have the updated TCU installed...then the center console button isn't required to be pushed...follow the instructions in post #4...where you just turn the ignition on, then search for new devices on your smartphone...look for "BMW _ _ _ _ _"...select it, then enter your PK code and wait for the indication on your smart phone that your BMW and the phone have paired.
