Weird Shake and Tire Wear (Pics)
 

I know there are a ton of shake and tire wear threads, but I haven't seen one with quite my issue (if they're even related). As you can see in the pics below the passenger rear tire's camber is way off (my understanding is that this is fairly typical for our X5s). The inside of the tire, though, is cupped in a very small area on the inside (see close up pics). The X5 also gets a steady vibration primarily between 70 and 80 mph. It feels like an out of balance tire, but I can't help but think that the bad tire wear and the vibration are related. I know very little about the rear components in an X5, but I am pretty mechanically savvy, Any guidance you guys (the experts) can give me? Do I need to start replacing rear suspension components? Just bushings? Something else? Your help is appreciated!!

About 98% of E53 X5's I have seen around have negative chamber issues some more than others. I'm planning on fixing this issue with my X in the summer. From what I have researched/learned you will need to change the following parts for both sides and then get an alignment. I would also replace the 4 sub-frame bushings. That could also be causing vibrations in the rear.

: upper control arm (wishbone)
: toe arm (guiding suspension link)
: link (integral link)
: outer lower control arm bushing (ball joint)



I tired to get an alignment when I first got the X and they couldn't do anything as the chamber would return to where it was. That's when they said I needed to replace those parts. Hope this helps.

You need a roadforce balance and a rear suspension overhaul (wishbones, ball joints, and guide links if needed)

Then get realigned with minimal toe.

front and rear full blown Sh*t ..no problems just preventative since my GF will be using the X5 from now on.

That kit is perfect and would do the job nicely. Are you planning to DIY or have an indy do it?

I plan to DIY. Will I need a special tool for the ball joints?

^Yes you do need the BMW rear ball joint removal tool to make it much easier. I tried using the general one for a day and failed. I bought the tool and remove the rear ball joints in less than 30 min.
This is the tool. Let me know if you want to borrow it.

For the rear ball joints you NEED the tool, don't waste an afternoon trying to do it without it
