thats not going to help the depreciation one bit!

my inefficient n62 doesnt seem all that bad now.

The difference of course is that every recall I've seen, it was to
*solve* the problem. Typically that involves putting in a revised
part and once done, the car is then OK. What I'm reading here is
that you need a new battery every 10K miles and there is no
solution. I would also say that if it takes you several years to go
10K miles, that isn't typical usage. Typical usage would be a new
battery in less than a year.

The fact that BMW is changing the batteries doesnt mean that every N63 equipped car needs new battery every 10 000 miles. I for one have a few X5 50i and 750i that I take care of, ranging from 15 to 37 k miles and all of them have the original batteries. All of this is blown out of proportion by the author and all commentaries.
Cammisa also wrote:
"BMW of North America has recognized a number of N63 components with high failure rates, including timing chains that stretch and snap, leaking crankcase ventilation and fuel lines, and malfunctioning fuel injectors, mass airflow sensors, and vacuum pumps", which was going to be a safety concern and recall if it was true.

1. Lets the engine run for 1-3 minutes at idle befpre turning off

2. Change the EPA rating.

3. Trickle charge.

It is actually unbelievable if they will not cover the battery under the maintenance plan...

The other interesting lesson, is for all BMWs, and X5s in particular, is the weird charging schema can lead to 'low voltage' conditions during use, with spurious error messages. Its why one of the standard responses- when someone lists a passel of serious sounding error codes from many modules- is 'replace the battery' or 'ow old is the battery'

Interesting.

Seems there's a lot of conflicting study result data on this subject online.

European study on the topic.....

Lithium-ion vs Lead-Acid cost analysis - PowerTech Systems PowerTech Systems

With an automotive issue (such as being discussed in this thread), a 50% DOD cycle will ruin approx 4 lead acid AGM batteries for 1 Li-Ion battery.

Do you have particular experience with PowerTech Systems.eu?

I maintained a Gould TLX-39B (Pb alloy-acid) battery and Battery University.com nowhere contradicts that training.

They dont ask you to pay for that, they do it for free. If someone want s to put golden batteries on his car that is his choice. For 1 year, every $150 100Ah battery will work just fine, but I am pretty sure it will be short lived only in extreme cases. I am a lot more concerned with my X5 destroying set of $1000 tires for 15 k miles than a battery for $150 or 300. This is what I call blown out of proportion.
I am sure the guy in UK with "non star rated tires that brake the transfer case" and rusting wheels that needs replacement would gladly exchange his problems for a new battery ;)

Actually they are. If you are under the 4yr/50k warranty and maintenance, you get a new battery at every oil change unless it was replaced in the last 12 months. That is according to the SIB that BMW gave to their dealers.
