2009 4.8 front and rear differential
Hi y'all, just did my first change. My truck have about 90k miles. The rear was super easy. However, I only drain about .8 of a quart. Is this the right amount of oil for the rear differential? The front was a pain to get to the fill plug. For the front, I only get to drain about .5 quart. When I went to put fluid back it took about . 7 quart and fluid still didn't run off the fill hole. Does anyone know the actual capacity for the front and rear differential? Should I gotten more fluid from both differentail? Thanks, Sam

What type of diff fluid did you use? I am looking to do mine soon and put Mobil 1 full synthetic in.

75w-90 of course.

I went with redline fluid. Truck feels looser/freed up, it doesn't feel stuck like before the fluid change.

Have you done your transfer case yet? If so what fluid did you put in there?

600 ml front /up to the fill hole rear. And BMW fluid for the case - you need one bottle @ $40, so not a big expense.

Hello,
I just replaced all of my differential and transfer case oils about two weeks ago. For the differentials i went with the castrol saf xo 75w-90 For the transfer case I went with the OE BMW fluid I filled both of the differentials all the way up to the fill hole because that's what it says in the procedure in the Rheingold software (the same software the dealership says). It's true that in some other documents it was posted as 600ml, but I preferred to listen to Rheingold procedure and fill it up to the neck. The same went for the transfer case as well. I didn't notice any improvement in the differentials but my dying transfer case is now better with the fresh oil, the trembling that I had when taking off with wheels turned to the mas is now gone and am only left with the bad sound...maybe i can prolong it's life a little more.
