Rear Brake Parts

I have a 2009 x5 4.8i with 90k miles, My idrive is calling for a rear brake job to be done. I think I'm going to stick with oem parts. Does anyone know where to get the parts for cheaper than the dealer over here charges? Thanks, Sam

I decided to go with Akebono pads and Zimmerman rotors (after extensive reading about cons and pros).

Got the pads on Amazon, rotors at partsgeek.com. Was surprised standard delivery took 1 day from partsgeek.com.

Is Zimmerman oem supplier for BMW rotors?

Does Zimmerman make rotors that fit X5? Yes.
Is Zimmerman *the* OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for just made X5s? Probably not, but I don't know which company is the OEM.

It is probably not in Germany any way :banghead:
Although I always go with OEM brands for the pads (Textar, ATE,etc) and I am never disappointed. Not on a dealer pricing of course.

Meyle rotors are also good and they supply Porsche and BMW. They cost less than Zimmermanns and offer similar quality and stopping power. As far as parts, buy the kit from ECS and be done with it.

I dunno, ECS seems to always be high on prices. IMO their business model is "buy our kits, you dont need to think"...but you pay for that.

Admittedly I havent exhaustively shopped them.

I believe their rear brake kit is $210.00 with pretty good components which includes the following parts:
Rear Meyle rotors
Rear Akebono pads
URO pad wear sensors
ECS stainless steel rotor set screws
2 AGS Syl-Glide Silicone Brake lubricant packets

Not too shabby :)

or try FCP Euro...

I bought Akebono's for my X5. Haven't installed them yet, but I have them on my Mercedes E55 and they are amazing! Reduced brake dust by 99% and still the same stopping power, no noise either. I hate the brake dust that OEM pads produce.

Matyoka 07-28-2015 04:56 PM

Unfortunately I did not find any Akebonos euros for the front... Not sure why but Textars are also very good.

Had Akebono pads and Zimmerman rotors (all 4) installed last week.
Quite a difference in brake feel! I expected Akebonos to be less grabby, but not that much! I wouldn't say they are underperforming (hard braking seems to do same job as originals) but it takes much more pedal travel to stop on lights and parking lot. Just something to get used to, I guess.

So far no brake dust - what a pleasure to see!

I will be going to camp this Friday, vehicle loaded to the brim (including cots and baby stroller on roof), pulling a single jets ski on trailer. Have pulled trailers before (3,000 lbs of trailer + household trash to the dump) without any trailer braking and stopping felt very reassuring on original pads. Will have to see how it feels on this trip with Akebonos.

Have not 'bedded' the pads yet - no opportunity was presented, so was braking carefully all this time.

How did you find Akebonos for the front? I searched the bottom of the Internet for a pair without any success.

Definitely want to give them a good work out before then, if not a full Zeckhausen Bedding....

I don't think you have my E70 50i... no Akebono fronts available as per Amazon search. I used Textars, pretty much BMW OEMs.

No question the Zeckhausen Bedding procedure will benefit you ... but more than anything else, give the brakes some warm up time. Start breaking earlier by riding the brakes lightly against the rotor, ESPECIALLY when towing!

But don't do it too long or continuously or you'll end up depositing brake pad material on the rotor surface ...

From their website:

Quote:

The best braking occurs when there is an even layer of of pad material deposited across the rotors

That's confusing ... contrary to what I have known for decades ...

Anybody else?
