2012 X5 35d - opinions?
 

Hello All,

I'm a long time BMW owner and I'm considering my first X5! I've come across a nicely optioned diesel example and wanted to get some thoughts on it. Here are the specs:

2012 X5 35D
51k miles
Sport
Premium
Comfort Access
HUD
NAV
Active Ventilated heated/cooled seats

I really enjoyed the car and especially enjoyed the low end torque of the diesel. Here are my questions:

1. Is a somewhat rough idle normal for the 35d? With A/C off and windows up and in Park I could feel a noticeable vibrations through the steering wheel.

2. How does the maintenance of the 35d compare to the 35i?

3. Any other thoughts on owning the diesel?

I have a very similar spec x5, but I've only owned it about 3 months. There is a slight vibration/roughness felt through the steering wheel, but it isn't too much. I just did a road trip from Seattle to the giant redwoods in CA and the car was superbly comfortable and never missed a beat. I love mine!

Cool road trip! I'm in the bay area and thinking to do a road trip to Seattle in a month or two!

I have a 2009 and coming up on 100k. Service costs is a bit more than the petrol engines ... But not much more.

About the vibration; it is a diesel! The technology is advanced from clattering and smoking but it is still a compression ignition engine. It is also a straight six.

I bought a 2011 diesel last month with 102k on it, dealer serviced since day one till 100k miles. Runs great and im getting 24+ mpg mixed driving.

Im in the same boat, trying to see whats different versus gas versions. Anyone know what the oil change intervals are? Im seeing around 15k based on past service records.

If you read here or at BimmerFest, I think you'll see shorter recommendations.

I plan on an annual service interval absent emergent issues. I will preemptively change the other 'lifetime' fluids sooner than later.

Agreed! I try to stay at 10 k miles oil change intervals with Castrol Proffesional.

Miles seem a little high for an '12. I would look for a lower mileage one if possible. I bought my '08 from a dealer in Los Angeles when it was 2 years old on a lease return and CPO with only 15K miles on it (and only have 69K on it now).

Seems like a great combo for the diesel. I WISH I had ventilated seats. They are extremely hard to find on the diesels in my experience shopping.
