E70 X5 Fuel Pump Extended Warranty
 

I just got a letter today that the in-tank fuel pump delivery module warranty is being extended to 10 years without mileage limitation. This is for my 2010 X5 35d.

I just got the same letter too. Mine is a 2009 4.8 though. Do I have to take my truck to the dealership? Thanks, Sam

You don't have to take it in unless you have a failure.

Read the title of the thread and see the picture of the power connector in the fuel pump further down the thread.

Seems one of the power connector pins will get hot and start to melt the plastic housing causing an Evap error or fuel system leak. If it gets bad enough it could cause some fuel leakage, premature fuel pump failure or really lose of power to the fuel pump, melted power connector and at the end of the day other than an Emissions problem, it could possibly be a fire hazard.

So for anyone that has an E70, suggest you take some time one weekend and at least pull the rear seat, fuel pump access cover and fuel pump power connector and inspect the power pins and connector body for overheating and discoloration. This would be a good preventative measure and it might be something you do every few years now that this issue has been identified.

Again, I assume BMW is doing this to not have to recall any of these vehicles, it is probably some back office deal brokered between a Federal Agency and BMW. Most car manufacturers do not extend the warranty on items unless they have a significant number of complaints or identify this as a pretty big problem.

I will be looking for this letter or if someone can scan and post a PDF here it would be helpful. I did replace my pump a few months ago and it would be nice to get a reimbursement if possible.

See post number 3 of this link. I just got my letter yesterday as well. Checking the connectors was not a big deal - took about 10 minutes with a 10 mm socket. I went ahead and checked connectors on both the right and left sides (two connectors on right side, one connector on left side) - they all looked perfect. No signs of burning/melting/heating.

Hardest part was threading the seat belt buckles when putting the bench seat back.

Thanks for the link with the documents. I assume my vehicle is covered and I will see if I can get a reimbursement for the fuel pump replacement.

As for the Left/Drivers side sender, it is not likely to be a problem because the fuel level sensor does not handle hardly any current.

It is actually the fuel pump power pins on the Right/Passenger side sending unit this is a problem.

I have seen this on other makes and models where one of both of the power pins seem to be too loose and over heat as time goes buy.

Usually the more run hours/miles the more likely the problem is to show up.

Looks like the diesels are covered, but i never heard of this problem on a diesel.
