Electronic Parking Brake Malfunction - EMF issue?
Been trying to use my google-fu to find a solution to this, but it seems like most people's solutions is getting their car to the dealership.
My 07 x5 is already out of warranty, so it is up to me. After scanning the car, the autologic told me that I have an EMF issue and that (BMW part #34436850289) needs to be replaced. This is a $700-$800 dollar item, so I am trying to see if there are any easy/alternative solutions to that could possibly fix this before simply just purchasing the part from BMW. The car is not stuck with the parking brake on. However, it does show the sign/light that the electronic parking brake is no longer functioning. Any info/insight would be appreciated. Thanks. -Don |
I would probably be looking for a used module at the price the new ones are going for. The problem is the used ones are still fetching close to $500 as well!
There is a parking brake motor on ebay from Poland for around $250, but not sure how easy this is to replace. |
My parking brake did not fail on, so I do not have to worry about that right now. It failed in the "open" position, so I am able to currently drive my car normally. However, the parking brake can not be activated.

Well I have a different story for the parking brake.
My parking brake, DSC, ABS, xDrive lights comes on from time to time, every time it's on I can't use my handbrake, however things went back to normal just after restarting the car. My mechanic scanned the code and gave me the same part 34436850289 to replace, costs 2000 parts+labor here in australia. I'm just not so convinced that if the module is bad, then how come that it just become OK after restarting the car? |
That's expensive. It doesn't look like a hard part to install, if you are mechanically inclined.

I would go new - at least you'll get a longer warranty.

Assuming the previous unit lasted ~7-8 years before giving out, I would think most replacement units would outlast their warranty life. Although, that is definitely one of the considerations for simply just purchasing a new unit.

I, too, have been "googling" this issue as my Parking Brake Malfunction warning light just all of a sudden came up two days ago. My parking brake is not engaged and that allows me to drive the car. I'll share whatever I find on the net and hopefully you would have had better luck than me.. |
I just got back from the dealer picking up my vehicle due to parking brake malfunction light. This is was done:
