For those of you that did this repair before, did any of the bolts make a creaking noise? Bought a set of E-torx sockets, but waiting on a 1/4 in E10 for that back bolt before I disassemble it all. Was curious how tight those bolts were, so I broke free the top bolt. Not much torque on them, so it broke free pretty easily. But when tightening it back up it made a creaking noise. Worried it might be a sign or a stressed/damaged bolt. Should I replace it with a new bolt, or is that nothing to worry about?

Sounds like you cross threaded it. Back it off, remove, and check threads, see if they look like you new shiny metal.

Didn't actually undo the bolt all the way. Doing the job tomorrow and just planning ahead to see if it was tight enough to justify removing that coolant hose that's in the way of the bottom e10 bolt to get a socket in there. In which case I'd need to pick up some more coolant. Just a full turn to see how easy they break loose, which was pretty easily, then tightened it back up. So couldn't have cross threaded it. Just an alarming sound that makes the nightmare of a snapped bolt head come to mind. I'm assuming it's a reusable bolt as it's steel and has no blue on it.

I used the one for the x3. Its the same engine. I removed the fan shroud and the metal cross member for better access.

The fan slides out easily. Its seriously not worth the 800 bucks at the stealership.

guys, what is the name/description of the tools used to remove the fan?

Just an update. Did the work yesterday, and really not a bad job at all. The youtube video is incredibly helpful and covers most everything you'll need to know. If I were to do it again though, I'd probably have drained a bit of coolant, and emptied out the oil filter reservoir as much as possible. You lose a decent amount of both when pulling this thing apart, and it makes a mess. I ended up getting a tiny amount of oil in the coolant system which I didn't notice til I topped it up and bled the system. Saw a few brown spots floating on top in the reservoir. So i'll probably change out the coolant as a precaution. Definitely not an $800 job. Took me about 2 hours, and that's probably because I went a little crazy with the cleaning everything up after pulling it apart.
