Dealer Replacing Valve Stems - What Else?

Took the X in to the dealer for a warranty claim on an oil leak, and they tell me I need valve stems. I hadn't noticed any of the symptoms, but warranty is covering the repair so I've got no reason to argue with them.

My question is this - is there anything else should I pay to have done at the same time? I'm not sure what method they're using to do the seals (I will ask as soon as I can get the tech back on the phone), but the last message they left did say it's a 26 hour job. The vehicle will be under drivetrain warranty for another year, so anything on that front I'd prefer to defer but at the same time don't want to stuck with a bigger bill 13 months from now.

I'm not sure but maybe state what year/model you have and how many miles on it and when the warranty expires.

Yeah good point, always forget this forum doesn't include that. It's an 08 48i, 117k. Warranty for another year as stated.

Timing chains/guides? Also you can open up the book that comes with the car(if you have one) and look at recommended maintenance pages. It may advise to change water pump, thermostat and some other things at that mileage or close. They, most likely, will pull or drop the engine, given the time required, so might as well do little things.

Thanks Roman. I have the book, but that's not really the stuff I'm talking about. I am wondering about chain guides - good point there - and will talk to the dealer about it. This engine doesn't suffer from that deficiency like the last to the best of my knowledge, but may still may sense to freshen them up.

I would say coolant transfer pipe. But, the dealer will mostly likely pull the heads to do the valve stem seals and thus you will get a new coolant pipe anyway. Front engine seals will also get replaced. If they do pull the engine, have them replace rear main seal and transmission input shaft seal.

I doubt they will take the heads off if they are only doing the valve stem seals

I bet they do. That's the "book" way to do it.

I bet they will too since BMW is footing the bill.
