Front diff notice after fluid change

Hello,I just changed my front diff oil with redline 75w90 fluid on my e70 xdrive 4.8. Went for a drive and from the front right hand side I could hear like a ticking noise or gear noise that gets louder as the car goes faster.
Did I used the wrong fluid? What did I do wrong?
Thanks

Oh yeah I forgot to mention the car has 137k and this is the first time it been changed. Also I changed the transfer case fluid with the special oil it uses.

I use Motul 75w90 synthetic in my diffs, no problem. Something touching and making the noise?

Mflara420 01-03-2016 10:13 PM

I thought I was good with redline 75w90 fluid but I guess not. I just ordered oem fluid, hopefully that helps.

Hard to believe the lubricant is the problem unless it's underfilled perhaps.
Are you sure the noise was not present before the change?
Ticking sounds more like a CV joint or wheel bearing perhaps.
Is noise worse when you drive in tight circles?

I know is hard to belive, I've done this to all my cars and never had a problem. The noise wasn't there before the oil change. The sound comes more from the right hand side of the car, it gets louder and faster with speed.

You know, few months ago I replaced front diff fluid with Red Line and also noticed increase in noise - not by much, but still. I'm awaiting warmer weather to change it again to test the "red line sux!" theory...

Hmmm, there are two versions of the RL 75w90, one with frictions modifiers for LSDs, and the other without.

Anyone have a source or part number for OEM fluid?

Ohh wow, good one.

Mflara420 01-06-2016 01:15 PM

Well 5he sound still there! I read you have to code the transfer case for the new fluid but in all the diy don't mention that. Can anyone who done this chime in.

That's what my buddy who's a tech at BMW told me. The TC needs a reset, but he said it was just a "reset counter" for my 2012.

Found the factory diff fluid, $50 for 3 half liter containers. Do you recall how much fluid went into each diff?

Might as well try that. The front fluid took one liter, I didn't do the back diff.

Thanks, I'll order 3 liters.

Just finished chatting with my buddy. He said, "adaptions need to be reset to factory settings for the new fluid/wear/driving profile."

Can you please ask him if I really have to take it to the dealer.

Yes, it's part of the drain and refill of TC procedure.

davidmaria1 01-06-2016 02:54 PM

The last transfer case procedure I saw at the dealer was for an e60 and it retailed for $450.00. No kidding. $450.00

:wow: $450 for some fluid and to CTRL+ALT+DEL a module. SMH

Mflara420 01-06-2016 05:46 PM

Can you use INPA to reset it?

The answer is yes. Go search on this forum or bimmerfest I can't remember. I used INPA to reset my TC adaptation and register the new battery.

Technically, you should only put 650 ml in the front diff. Why? Ask BMW...

pshovest 01-07-2016 01:38 PM

I thought 650 was for the transfer case?

fast4d 01-07-2016 05:17 PM

confession: the first gen X5 we traded in at 170k miles. diffs and transfer case had original fluid in there. I changed the transmission regularly but never touched the diffs since they were not limited slip.

Price 01-07-2016 05:18 PM

TC takes ~full bottle (~1 liter)

So I replaced RL with Liqui Moly and I think (for what it's worth, as this is a totally subjective, unscientific, "butt dyno" opinion), it did help with noise, i.e. I can't hear it anymore over engine/tire/etc. noises.

Currently at the shop getting diagnosed.

Mflara420 02-16-2016 05:58 PM

Just got it back from the shop. And all it had was a bracket with a cable attached to misplaced at the top of the transfer case. Expensice lesson learned.

How did that happen?

Thought the only thing you did was fluid change...

Well, hey- COULD have been worse. Hope it is truly the end of the story.

Mflara420 02-20-2016 05:10 PM

I guess I misplaced it without realizing it.
You're right but that hurt my ego when he told me that.

guscavalieri 02-27-2016 09:58 AM

Always go with the original fluid....

ZetaTre 02-29-2016 03:23 PM

LOL to those who blamed the oil: you guys spend way to much time on forums... :stickpoke

guscavalieri 02-29-2016 04:51 PM

And by the way... front and rear differentials use different oils

Is true, I been running that fluid for a couple months with no issues I'll just change it for piece of mind.
