E70 Knowns Issues ? Looking to upgrade ...
Hello, I'm thinking of trading in my E53 for a E70 pretty soon. I was going to fix up the E53 with a 4.8is body kit and add the style 187's ect... but wife said she would rather invest the money on a newer X5. Thinking about a 07-08 I6. Wondering what kind of problem those engines have. Also came across a 2010 X5 Diesel I6 3.0L/183 with 73,000 miles at a local dealer. Is the Diesel any good? Just looking for some feedback. Thanks |

Thanks for the reply. Really looking forward to the E70. Love the interior. I've only ran into 1 diesel, rest all gasoline. The diesel is black and i'm kind of looking for a white, silver, or grey E70. I've got about 2 months to decide.

THEN decide on color. If you are the kind of person that needs to find the car at the dealer, touch it...feel it... look at it.... and only then make a decision about buying that one example, you will be limited in terms of deal and choices. But...if you can determine what you want and then shop the country (or within a weekends drive) you can select from far more cars. Decide on drivetrain..then must haves or must not haves... then know what the options are...search from there. Good luck! |
If you are going to upgrade, look for 2012+. IMHO, why bother upgrading to a now-dated 2007 3.0si.
With 2012, everything is still relevant in terms of looks and toys. A used one can be found for good money, after the typical hefty depreciation hit original owner (like me!) took. Choices there are: 50i : 4.4L twin-turbo petrol 35i : 3.0L turbo petrol 35d: 3.0L turbo diesel Here on forums, you would find people mostly talking about 35d and 50i. Strangely, not much talk about 35i. About all I can recall on them is the high pressure fuel pump issues. Lack of feedback on 35i is either a sign of better reliability or simply 50i/35d owners just being more petrol heads (especially them diesel folks, a vocal bunch :) ). Do your homework on drivetrain, as ard said. Then pick options and colors. |
Agreed, go for a newer one if you can afford it. Mine was $67k in 2011 and i got it for $20k in 2015 :D 2011 35d with 102k miles during purchase.

I agree with the others here stating to go 11'+ model years. I was originally looking at 2009/2010 but eventually decided 2011/2012 was worth the slightly extra cost. I ended up getting a very well optioned 2011 35d w/ 72,000 miles for $27k. This also came with BMW warranty and service contract for a full year.

Does anybody know if the turbos on the diesel fail or have known issues. Going to take a look at the 2010 E70 diesel on Friday. Has only 73,000 miles. My biggest question is, is the diesel engine reliable ? What are it's known issues ?
|
The M57 engine has been around for many years. In fact it was first seen in Europe and later introduced to the states so by the time in came here the little issues had been vetted. Any issues you may see will be emissions related.
|
Like anything, be prepared to drop some money into the vehicle shortly after you purchase it.
Search DEF tank problems, DPF regeneration and vacuum controlled motor mounts. Those may 2 terms may keep you busy for a while. If the same engine is offered in other models, also check other forums as well. |
Do you have emissions in your state? If not, then going with the diesel and removing all the clean diesel parts will make the 35d a great option. It will cost you around $2k but it will be worth it. There are few on this board who have done it.

MPG is great, im averaging 25 mixed driving during non-winter conditions 23ish during winter. Once got 29mpg on all highway with cruise set to 72mph.

Going tomorrow morning to check out a few E70s. Pretty excited :D. Hopefully I find a nice one. I have on my radar a few of them with one owner. First stop is to check out the 2010 35d. Wish me luck!

I agree on keeping it 2011+, if anything just bc the iDrive interface still feels modern and interfaces with iphones, etc pretty well.
Make sure to try out the 50i or M. The big turbo V8's offer a pretty nice grin factor. |

I ended up getting a 2008 3.0si Alpine White III on Beige Interior. Was more in my range and doesn't feel dated when compared to my E53. With a few mods she'll feel updated and should keep me pretty busy. Happy with purchase. :D |
Congrats! You made a good choice over the V8 and probably over the diesel. 2008 3.0 should be pretty reliable, regardless of the horror stories you hear here.

Check the oil filter housing and oil cooler surrounding and see if there's any oil leaks. Mine starts around 67K miles, and I just changed it recently. Gotta have to right tool to finish the job.
