Scheduled an Oil Change at the Dealership...
 

I dropped off my car for an oil change at the dealer today...Before I even leave the place with a loaner, they tried to make me get an alignment, and I said, "no, not right now - since i'm gonna get new tires soon..."

So I get to school and I get a phone call saying that I wasn't due for an oil change yet, so they were not going to do it.. I told them while I was there that I do my oil changes every 5k... They totally disregarded what I said and asked me if they could do a "check up" instead. I didn't want to be bothered so I said, "fine..."

They found a leak around the oil filter housing seal (parts are $201.94 labor $690.88 tax 65.85 totaling $958.67) and they think my rear tires need to be changed (I checked it and it was at around 6/32" tread left..)

This "leak" was my main concern...Anybody ever had to change the oil filter housing? I did a quick search and most people fixed it just by changing the $20 gasket...

At the end of the day, I pretty much paid $115 for the checkup and no oil change...SMH!

Also, one of the reasons why I actually went to the dealer for an oil change was because I knew they would do a "checkup" anyway.. And it is usually around $80 for an oil change at the dealers which probably cost just as much as doing it myself..

Sounds like you failed to manage your SA.

Yes they certainly try and upsell. My oil change also resulted in "You need new tires, your filter housing is leaking, your belt tensioner is shot, and your PS fluid is dirty"!
My tires were about like yours, OK IMHO. I bought a belt tensioner and idler pulley and will do it myself for about $75 (plus about $20 in cool torx tools), and when I told them I had just changed the PS fluid myself about 2 months ago, their response was, "Well, we generally tell everyone with 66K miles that they should do this", i.e. they never looked at the condition of the fluid. As for the oil filter housing, I changed it on my E53 so I'll do the same on the E70. Who knows, it may be easier!

Well, this could have easily resulted in 2-3 [BMW dealer] dollars bill :yikes:

I think the main cost is because BMW Removes the intake manifold which is not needed to complete this job. I to use the dealership for my oil changes. $100 is and free breakfast is well worth it to me rather than dicking around with the oil change myself and the cost is minimal in retrospect.

I got the "PS Fluid is dirty" and "Oil Filter Housing is leaking" on my N54. At least the filter housing was covered under warranty (along with 6 injectors!). I told them to skip the PS fluid.

How can you tell if it's the actual housing or just needs a new gasket?

Do not go to the stealership!! Get yourself a good BMW indy mechanic.

I don't think replacing the whole housing is common, unless it was cracked somehow. I'm not sure how they came up for the total $ on parts.. $200 is on the low side if they intend to replace the whole housing, way too much if they are replacing just the gasket.

I did the OFHG on my E53 ( I'm thinking there is not much difference) Took me around half a day. I am glad I know I saved $1000 by doing it myself:thumbup:

If you can't diy find a good indy this shouldn't cost that much at a good indy.
