In the market for an E70
I am in the market for an E70... coming from and e53 3.0 and e60 3.0
Im looking at getting one that's 2013 model with comfort seats, navi, panoramic sunroof, backup camera. The motor i am looking is the 6 cylinder.. mileage under 50k.. UPDATE= BUDGET= 27K what else should i look for? any things to know ahead of time and avoid? thanks in advance |
I also had a 2002 e53 3.0i, now a 2009 e70 30si. I like the sixes, they are plenty quick for my use (wife and kids). IMHO condition is #1. You don't want something that has been abused and looks it.

AKE53,
Apparently, (according the experts here), you are idiot if you don't pay $250 -$300 for a third party independent pre-purchase inspection. Don't be an idiot. ;). (even with existing warranty left!!!). then again... the guys that recommend that are probably third party independent pre-purchase inspectors. Good luck. Charles |
As long as you have the LCI headlights and USB port for audio. Well, for me, that's all I want.
|
Whatever you buy, check the Carfax and see if the car was CPO certified before Jan 1st, 2014. The CPO warranty is transferable only if it was certified before the above date. I was lucky to find mine at a dealership (not BMW) that had no idea the car was CPO certified in 2013. First thing i did after I bought the car was to stop by the BMW dealership and put my name on the CPO.

I recently bought a '13 xDrive35d, with the options you are looking for plus HUD, side view cameras, and comfort access. The comfort sets would be my "no compromise" option, followed by comfort access.
|
Personally, I wanted the Top Hi-Fi audio and rear climate control and tobacco interior. I found a one owner with the hideous Platinum Bronze exterior and that was my only compromise. The basic sound system is junk but the Hi-Fi is better, Top Hi-Fi is just lovely. That was a must for me as well as a trailer hitch. Mine is a pre-lci as I wanted no part in the turbo 6cyl and all the crap that comes with it. I am extremely happy with my choice as I am sure you will be once you find the one that's right for you.

I updated, that my budget is 27k for a 2013 with the 6 cyl motor..
I know bmw electronics because I used to run a shop and work on diagnostics... |
I would not buy an E70 right now. There is an open airbag recall and BMW dealers can't sell them and won't take them as a trade in.
|
I went by the BMW dealer and the recall is not for the X5 but the X3. I don't know what exactly is going on but that is all I've heard.
As for the X5 alone. I had mine now for about a 100K miles and I will agree with others. At ALL COST, you must do a pre purchase inspection. In the last 3 years of owning the car I have spent about 7K on maintenance, and this does not include the other 4K I still need to spend on the valve seals. I do have a 4.8 car but you should expect similar maintenance if you are not car full. Good luck to you, if you get one post some pictures. |

The BMW dealer did not give you the correct information, the recall covers the E70 X5, the original X3, the X1, the E90 3 series, the 1 series and probably some other models. |
By my VIN....
Year: 2013 Make and Model: BMW X5 XDRIVE35I US February 5, 2016 | Recall Campaign No. 16V-071 DRIVER'S FRONT AIR BAG Status: Remedy not yet available Last Updated: February 12, 2015 DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM During air bag deployment in an accident, the driver's front air bag module may produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to rupture. SAFETY RISK Inflator rupture could result in metal fragments striking the driver or other passengers, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR Your BMW center will replace the driver's front air bag module. However, due to the large volume of new inflators needed to repair vehicles, the necessary parts will not be immediately available. As a result, owners of affected vehicles will be informed of the recall in an initial notification letter. Once replacement parts become available BMW will send another notification letter to owners, beginning with older model year vehicles located in BMW's previously defined HAH (High Absolute Humidity) region and expanding accordingly as more parts become available. For additional information or assistance, please contact Customer Relations and Services at [email protected], or at 1-800-525-7417. View PDF http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Recal...Number=16V-071 |

My e46 is affected by the same recall. For both front airbags. They have the parts for the passenger side, but a year on and there's still no driver side parts as far as I know. (At least I never got a followup letter.) |
Buy a loaded Tahoe :)
I'll be getting one when the wife takes the diesel this year. |
Posters above are correct. E70 X5 is included in the recall. Recently went to a few BMW dealers to trade in my E70. One dealer flat out refused to buy it in trade due to the recall. BMW doesn't seem to have a fix yet, so the dealer would have to bear all the carrying costs of keeping the vehicle til it can be fixed. Strangely two other BMW dealers had no problem with it.
Buying from a dealer is probably out as they likely won't sell them until there is a fix. But, you might be able to use the recall issue to negotiate a good deal on a private party sale. Definitely take it to a good independent for a pre purchase inspection. |
BMW dealers have been instructed not to sell affected vehicles until further notice. They are receiving help with the carrying cost, but it does not appear they are receiving help with depreciation. Thus, low trade offers, if any. The expectation is it will take up to two years to have enough replacement airbags to complete the recall; they will be prioritized into high humidity climates first.
So I will not be trading my e70; as soon as it stops raining I'll take pics and put it in the for sale forum, and on Autotrader. |
+1 on the pre purchase inspection.
|
We just got 2 letters from BMW NA today for the 135 and X5 (Of course mine) We were told that we would be contacted when parts were available.
|
Kind of a scary that the part of your car that is supposed to help save your life could actually shoot shrapnel at you if it fails. Sounds like they're doing what they can, but just so many airbags to replace that it's probably a logistical nightmare.
|
+1 I got a letter for the e70/e90 about the airbag recall...notified when parts are avail.
|
I got the same letter a week ago, from what I read online they will start doing repairs in the summer.

IMO, the 3.0 engine is a bit small for a 5,000+ lb. vehicle. It's nice to step on the gas and go with the 4.8.

I can honestly say I would not buy another X5. I have had so many problems with my 2011. Even though it is a CPO certified BMW up to 7 yrs 100k miles, I'm dropping it off again, every other month for something, the proof is in the pudding. My service writer printed all my repairs and it was a book! Every service performed, following the factory maintenance schedule was from the dealership, except for the last set of tires, as they would not install non run flats. Fun to drive is awesome but reliability is horrible. I have the N55 motor, just hit 70k miles. It was in the shop almost 45 days last year. One thing I can say is that I got a chance to drive several different BMW models as loaners.
