Installed my brand new LUX H8 160 LED bulbs 1 doesn't work...
 

Hello all! I know this had been touched on multiple times but I just wanted to explain what I'm dealing with and see if my situation differs from anyone else's?

For starters, when I recently purchased my wife an 09' 4.8i there was a massive moth inside the headlight housing that the dealer said they would remove for us. Upon delivery of the X5, not only was the bug still there. But it looks like they attempted to remove the daytime running light to see if they could get into the housing. From what I can see when I was installing my new LUX H8 160's, the dealership more than likely pulled to hard on the wiring in an attempt to probably get there hands in there to remove the OEM H8 bulb. They weren't competent enough to remove the bug so they installed the daytime running light bulb back into place incorrectly and on top of that they installed an H11 bulb instead of the H8.

Upon the installation of my new LUX bulbs (on the side that had the H11 & wasn't functioning) that was when I saw that the wires going into the connector that plugs into the bulb itself had been pulled on too hard by the technicians and now about a quarter to half inch of both wires were not only exposed, but I'm sure that they had came in contact with each other. In a quick temporary fix situation, I was able to wrap both of the exposed wires separately with the use of electrical tape to prevent them from touching each other untill I can find an Indy shop the fix the exposed wire issue.

After that I plugged in the LUX and neatly tucked the extra wiring down into the back of the housing & turned on the headlights so that I could see the comparison to stock while the other light hadn't been touched yet. Well... No dice and I was disappointed to see that the new LUX wasn't working. So my next move was to swap over from the other (functioning OEM bulb) from the opposite headlight to see if there was power running to the light. Once again, it didn't work either which led me to check all three fuses related to the headlights that I could find in the bmw manual in the glove box.

After checking all the fuses to find them in perfect condition, I put a meter on the connectors for both headlights to see if they were getting power to them or if maybe the one wasn't getting enough. The amps on the functioning headlight connector read perfectly, however to no surprise the non functioning connector had zero power running to it.

So at this point is my only option to take the X5 to a shop and have them pull the box (can't think of the name at this time) inside the fender well out and reset it along with fixing the exposed wires issue? Or does anyone have some better advice for me? Thanks tremendously for any guidence/help that anyone can please provide for me! Personally, I would drive my ass right back to the dealership you bought it from and have them pay to fix it. I also wouldn't tell them you attempted to change the bulb yourself. They could easily say "Well, you probably did it when you tried changing the bulb..." I don't know how they could have done that anyways. There was an ample amount of wiring when I swapped my halo bulbs out.

There is a major reason I

A.)Never buy a BMW from a Non BMW Stealership (Ford Chevy Etc.) because they have their gorillas who are used to slamming around shitbox Silverados and Cavaliers.

B.)Get everything in writing the second I notice something and make sure it is done by a good BMW indy or a Dealership vs them trying to fix it.

C.)I'd also verify they didn't change your oil with regular oil. I love when I hear "We just serviced it and its good to go." Yeah right.

Was it working when you got it?
Regardless, go back and say its not working and tell them the wrong bulb was installed and the wires look damaged. You can at least try. If they dont fix it then its up to you to fix it i suppose.

Thanks for the advice bmrboi2 and I fully agree with you (now that it's too late) regarding the purchase of a BMW from a from a non BMW dealership. However it's too late now, and after my BEYOND horrid experience I had with this particular dealership I'll NEVER step foot on that lot again.

On the bright side of things though, I have personally spoken with not only the upper management of that dealership, but I was able to contact the personal owner of that Auto group and in detail explained my experience stating that if I was a business owner, I'd personally want to know how customers viewed their purchasing experience so that I could better my own company. He's actually getting back to me today in regards to all the issues that this dealership caused, so I'm looking VERY forward to his remedy and outlook on the situation.

I could go on and on about what all happened during the purchasing process, but I've already gone on a rant in my first thread ever posted on this site so I will not start that all over again.

So thank you again on your insight and besides of course seeking to have these repairs fixed on that dealers dime, does my problem sound like something that I can have fixed by taking my E70 to an independent shop to reset the computer found in the wheel well? Or is it more than likely just a matter of correcting the wiring that got semi stripped out of the connector? Your time is greatly appreciated! :thumbup:

Well... After MANY days of going back and forth with the dealership that striped out the 2 wires from the harness that connects the daytime running headlight bulb to the car, at this time it looks like it's up to me to fix it. I had the X5 at the BMW service shop to make warranty repairs ONLY, but had them check into the headlight issue. They are claiming that I need to "REPLACE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY (RIGHT FRONT HEADLIGHT WIRING FRAYED)" priced @ $2,687.00. Of course there is no way in hell that I'd ever have them do that for me because I'm sure an Indy shop can do it for MUCH less and probably/hopefully simply be able to fix the wiring harness/connector itself that has the 2 wires stripped from it. Any thoughts on this? Or is this something that I should be able to do on my own??

Can you post a good pic of the wires damaged?

It's pre-LCI right? buying it off ebay won't cost that much.

Yes it is pre-LCI. However, I've looked and I'm just not certain what exactly to purchase. Any recommendations of the official name of the harness/plug that connects the bulb to the car? Thanks!
