Getting back into an X5...this time an E70
 

It's been years since I have been on here. I had an E53 before that I brought back from the dead (bought it for $500, put an engine in it and drove it around for a while). Not too long after I finished everything, I started working at a VW dealer and traded in my X5 for a TDI Jetta. Not too long after that, I kept regretting getting rid of my X5. Did it for years until one day my wife and I were talking and she flat out said, "Let's get another X5. We both loved it and if we are going to have an SUV, we might as well get something nice and that you can work on."

Now here I am 3 years later and because of the diesel scandal, I have a chance to dump the Jetta free and clear and go back to being an all BMW family again. I went and looked at a one owner Titansilber 2009 6-cylinder on Sunday and my wife and I loved it. It felt good to finally find another X5, especially one that had all service records from the dealer since day one of ownership. It was a private owner who took very good care of it. During the drive, everything felt great and although it wasn't an E53, it had many more amenities than one and it sure as shit was a better vehicle than my TDI (aside from fuel mileage, but that is something I could compromise on for more room). I called up USAA, got a check on the way, and I'm going to pick her up on Sunday.

I'm glad to be back in the game. Once I get it, I will post pictures up and hopefully be more active on the board as I can see myself not being able to leave it alone under my ownership. lol

Congrats I hope you like it. I just sold my VW Passat Wagon for an E70 X5 as well.

74k on the clock, ALL service records (all done at the dealership here; coincidentally, I worked at that same dealer in the past and that's where I picked up my last X5), 1 owner from brand new. Just put 4 brand new tires on it, so my next step is to get a spare in the trunk for the wife.

Before I purchased it, I did a lot of research on what common failure points are. Although I was taken back by some of them (especially people talking about transmission failures), it didn't really sway my decision not to get one. Shit, I figured if I could bring an E53 back from the dead, then an E70 with all documentation shouldn't be too bad. The only thing I am going to keep a real close eye on is that panoramic roof.

Any inputs from anyone who have had these outside of warranty?

Get ready for a new water pump and thermostat - if it hasn't already been done. They're known to go around that mileage.

Can you get a 3rd party warranty?

Nice! This year/model must be the most reliable E70 out there. The engine also has some problem areas addressed and upgraded, compared to '07 and '08.

Both have already been done, including a radiator. I was thinking about a 3rd party warranty, but I have access to employee cost on the parts and a lift if needed. It has crossed my mind, no doubt....only because my wife drives it 85% of the time.

Thank you! It's the same color as my E46, so keeping it clean isn't a chore.
