New Tires
 

So about a month ago I changed the tires on the X5 to a more comfortable Bridgestone Ecopia. Overall not the best or worst tire I've ever owned. I prefer a Pirelli Scorpion on my SUVs but my brother is regional manager @ Bridgestone so I got a heavy, heavy discount. They are whisper quiet, nicely sticky and ride nicely.

I inflate my tires to 35 psi front and rear because I hate that mush feeling you get from 32psi. I recently got nabbed going 107 on a back road in the 135 so I've been using the X5 as my daily driver.

With these tires, most amazingly I have noticed a HUGE bump in gas mileage. Like 3-4 mpg. I was averaging 19.4mpg and am now sitting at 22.6. A tank of gas is lasting longer and I am pleasantly surprised. I have made zero changes to my driving style (still an asshole) and was just shocked at the change.

It makes sense if you went from run flats to these. Run flats are heavy as shit.

Well fortunately the cop wrote the ticket for 87 in a 50 vs more than double. It was irresponsible of me but it was fun. I had just pulled it out of the garage from storage and polished it up. Not used to 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. The X5 goes 0-60 eventually by comparison. With that little mishap my husband and I decided to part ways with the 135. gonna just get a 335 convertible. Its safer. Im not allowed to drive the 235 anymore. LOL

I had a 335i with JB4, and some bold on goodies, ohh man that thing was fun. Sold it for the x5d. Wifey wasnt amused with my liking for sideways lol Needed a family vehicle anyways. Oh well..

My husband had a 335 with that fist year N55 engine and it was stunning. Lemans Blue, 6 speed, every option available but it was a complete POS. It spent more time at the dealership and with BMW engineers then it did in our possession. I am a bit leery but I've heard better with the 2012 and 13 models. So, Im on the hunt for a CPO Convertible in a 6-speed M-sport. The 135 is just too tempting every time I get into it.

Have ambient temperatures changed over the course of this 'switch' in tires? I wonder if that could be impacting efficiency.

2-3MPG and every BMW would be running ecopias from the factory....

The temperature here in Illinois has been from the low 40's to the low 80's and fluctuating everywhere in between. I swear, I have done absolutely nothing different in my driving style or the type of fuel I use. The truck has remained unchanged except for a steering shaft replacement and the cabin filters being replaced.

Improved mpg based on a few full tank refills with arithmetic, or what the OBD readout is showing?

In 14.5 yrs and ~ 108k miles, our '01 3.0 full tank refill w/arith has shown very steady and even mpg over all that time, under a myriad of driving conditions...

Sometimes a full tank fill will yield only 18 or 19 with days of stop go/climbing up and down our mtn road, or the usual 20-22+ to low 23, on our many road trips.

But, a 2-3 mpg increase out of the blue has never happened, in all the cars we have driven over this half century plus of cars/m'cycles, without some mechanical fix that was eroding the mpg.

Maybe your 'mechanical fix' was the new tires pumped to 35 vs worn fluttering tires, not at 35, and if previous tires were RFTs, they are heavier. But still, a remarkable 'increase'...

Nice 'mpg >', but gas prices/gas cost are a slightly minor consideration driving these 2 1/2 ton+ bricks. :)

Agreed. Last tires were conti DWS. I only keep my tires to half life and never touch run flats. I don't really care much about MPG's (Like you said 2.5 ton boat anchors)

I figured it was helpful for someone who might be. I took a road trip this weekend and got 457 miles to that first tank. The truck was at 0 miles to empty when we got gas on our way home yesterday. I have only gotten at best 375 with this thing. It was a noticeable difference.

It was based off the OBD not my own calculations because there are too many variables with your own calculations.
