Not always, there is a campsite on the Pacific coast called Kirk Cove that I can back the X5 up to and open the hatch and view the entire Pacific from my "bed". I've also slept in the X5 in Death Valley in the winter. Nothing is better than waking up when its 35 degrees outside and turning on the engine to warm up my tent. I''m 5'11" and i fit diagonally quite comfortably on an air mattress. It's also a great refuge when its raining. But mostly I'm a backpacker and the X5 just gets me to the trailhead.

I am still unclear on how you're doing this. You're saying you lay the 2nd row flat and put an mattress in, and you can fit laying diagonally with the rear hatch closed?

Absolutely. When I'm car camping on the Pacific the hatch is open. In cold or stormy conditions I fit with the hatch closed. Unless you're over 6' you can prove this to yourself easily. I'm just slightly under 6'.

It's also great on a long drive. I can drop a rear seat and take a nap and let my wife drive or she can nap while I drive.
