Parking Brake! Vehicle May Roll
Has anyone seen this message? I could've sworn I once saw "Parking Brake Malfunction" but referencing the quick pic I took of the error, the title is what it actually said. Parking Brake! Vehicle May Roll. I can't find anything on this.
On the dash itself there's a yellow (P) light and PARK, as soon as the car is started (as opposed to just red PARK). But this issue has been very intermittent (twice in a few months). It goes away the next time it's started. The parking brake will not turn red (engage) when this occurs, but it's not stuck engaged when it's yellow either. It has auto hold but hardly use it. I want to be proactive with this since extended warranty is running out soon. Pic: http://imgur.com/a/uMVlu '08 3.0si |
I had same problem and fixed today.
I removed Auto Parking brake module and there was broken pin on motor, attached pin and everything is fine now. But as I understand you have intermittent problem, it maybe still loose contact on motor. Mine to restored itself for couple of minutes. You have to remove or at least open module and see if motor contacts is ok. |
Four years ago, the 7 series had a recall for a rolling away issue. Here's some links -- not sure if they will be useful or not.

OT warning:
Im guessing everyone that saw this thread thought about Anton Yelchin- his jeep rolled onto him and killed him...had been recalled too. Crazy how we view these things as annoyances ("oh another stupid government mandated recall")...but they can, in the perfect wrong scenario, be life and death. |
Hi guys, contributing an experience on this thread.
Mine is a 2012 X5 E70 Diesel. I don't have any problem with the parking brake BUT when I do an OBD scan one of the error codes is related to PARKING BRAKE malfunction. Very annoyed by this. How do we solve this? Where is the parking brake module? |
What fault codes you have??
Module is above the rear dynamic drive - under the cargo area. |

Just to update this thread with results - my shop reported 2 codes... something with EMF sensor and undervoltage. Ultimately they replaced the parking brake actuator (related according to another thread). Since it was so random, I'm not sure if this rids me of the problem, but it was a high cost done under warranty before it runs out, so better than not doing anything or waiting for it to come up again.
