Got it replaced via the recall today while getting an oil change. Definitely supposed to be a one-piece and it looked like the glue that held the old parts together had failed. The engine now seems smoother. Now, the X5 doesn't vibrate as much on idle and the GUH GUH GUH GUH GUH GUH GUH of the diesel engine seems quieter.

With that maf loose, the pressure into the engine was blowing out of the hole, AND the flow rate into and through the sensor itself was probably distorted.... frankly I was surprised it didnt throw a code!
