E70 X5 35D 4x4 and DSC MALFUNCTION
I drive 2012 BMW X5 35D. Issues when turning on the car Dashboard shut off and fuse 134 (dashboard fuse blown 5amp) Wipers would go on non-stop and I would loose all lights. This was my first electrical problem and I was freaking out! Replaced the 5amp fuse then started getting DSC AND 4x4 Chasis Malfuction. Took the vehicle in to local Indy shop was told it needed:
First, A #1 new battery, battery was almost four years old and that it needed to be replaced soon. Battery $400 with programing:bawling:drove the car few days problem persisted. #2 was then told needed calibration of angle sensor and software update. Got it done problem persisted. #3 was told alternator was bad, overcharging unit causing dashboard to shut down and blow fuse 134. Got it replaced $1,000 :bawling: problem persisted. By this time I was loosing my mind stressed out wanting to punch the shop owner. After negotiating some refund (minimal) I Finally decided to go into dealership and get a diagnose 134$. I was told it was the STEERING ANGLE SENSOR! Which is not sold separately. Steering switch unit part #61-31-9-164-423 price 763+labor and programming $1,200!! Again wanted to :bawling: Spoke to service manager (awesome smart dude) vented and was able to get a discount $850 (A deal I think, asked around town 1k+) and was reassured that if that didn't fix the problem he would eat the charge and figure it out. To my surprise...Problem finally fixed! Hope this helps guys |
Was your X diagnosed at the dealership?
|
OP, sorry to hear about your bad luck and thanks for posting. This "indy" shop charged you probably more than the dealer would have. First google search of the part # of the steering switch center finds it online for under $550. Labor includes removing the airbag and the steering wheel to replace it+programming. Not to mention a used one.

Good news is that you wont need a battery nor alternator for another 4-5 years- at least.

Pierce330, Yes my X5 was finally diagnosed correctly at my local dealership.
Bawareca, yes I did see that I am a DIY type and love working on my X5 (have done brakes, brakes service, oil change, filters and other basic maintenance) but the reprogramming and frustration that I was dealing with, along with the assurance of the dealer eating up the cost if they were wrong, pushed me to do it. Ard, Yes along with serpentine belt and ac stretch belt. Also hopefully a steering sensor |
