X5 e70 idrive control knob broken
 

So, my idrive knob was pulled up really hard (not explaining why) and I pushed it back down, it clicked into place, but now it doesn't work correctly.

It will spin to scroll through different options, but it will not click to select any options. Also, now it pulls out of position pretty easily.

Do I need to replace the entire module, with buttons, or is there a way to fix this?
If I need to replace, any of it, how do I find the part number?

As it states, simply enter your last 7 of your vin and that's all the correct parts for your car.

Searching the info you listed (but without your last 7) it appears you have to replace the entire control at a wholesale cost of $303.86. Found here:

Entire controllers are plentiful on ebay and inexpensive.

I've seen many on ebay for about $135 and up...but I want to re.over mine first to see the underside of it. The ones I've seen on ebay differ slightly and don't want to get the wrong one, even if they say it's the same model.

Wish I could just fix my current one and save the money.

So, I was able to completely disassemble the idrive controller and found the problem to be a torn tiny, 3mm wide, strip of flex cable circuitry that connects the function of the push button of the controller knob to the base. I know there are ways to repair flexible circuitry, but don't think those methods would withstand the continual use of this device, especially since the break is at a 90 degree curve in the flex circuit.
With that said, if anyone really wanted to mess with this device, all you need are some small pry tools, and a small set of torx drivers...a t8 for the 4 base screws and t6 for the screw holding the knob down to the post. Otherwise everything else is just snapped into position. Reassembly isn't that difficult either.

Additionally, it would not be difficult to switch out the black disc atop the knob with something more flashy or decorative.

Ordered my replacement unit and will install it once it arrives.
