New owner question.

I know for most of you this is going to be a stupid question, but this is my first X5. Where is the oil and transmission dipsticks? My X5 didn't come with an owners manual and I was checking over everything and am unable to locate these simple things. Also, is the tensioner pulley bolt a torque to yield bolt and should be replaced with the tensioner assembly or can you reuse the original bolt? Thanks!

No oil or transmission dip sticks. You check the oil through the computer. BMW says transmission fluid is "Lifetime". Don't believe it!! Change it at 50,000 mile intervals. Really stupid idea to remove the dip sticks IMHO.

Tensioner is a torque to yield bolt. Use a new bolt any time you remove it.

When I bought the new tensioner assembly, there was no bolt with it. Should one have come with it? Can you order them separately? What is the torque spec for the bolt? Also, does anyone know where to by a service manual for the E70, like a chiltons or Haynes?

json 02-04-2017 10:20 AM

I had to order it separately.. the torque specs I found were very strange, different numbers for different years.

I originally looked it up in ALLDATA and it showed a certain torque + degrees to rotate.
In ISTA/D, it is just showing 38Nm for a 2012 X5 N55.

Even more stupid to remove the temperature gage!

By the way. You can download and print the entire manual online. Free.
