Cell Phone Dash Mount

Hey Guys - new X5D owner here.

I drive a lot for work and it is important to me to have a nice cell phone mount for the new to me 2012 X5D. I read a lot of threads and did a lot of searching but didn't find too many pictures of different installed mounts.

Specifically, I am considering the Mechunik Mobile Dash Mount System from Bimmian but haven't found a single picture of the system installed with a phone on it or forum review. It is pricey to just buy and try. Does anyone out there use one of these? What do you think?

Also open to other recommendations - not interested in giving up a cupholder or accessory outlet though.

Thank you,
Dustin

I use a basic magnetic vent mount. Small metal pad that sits on the back of your phone, then a magnetic pad that pressure mounts on a vent. I put it on the vent between the ignition button and the iDrive display. Works perfectly. Very simple and inexpensive solution. It's also sooooooooooo much simpler to use than a traditional adjustable bracket mount.

This is the one I have, but there's a million branded versions out there:

These also come in more angle-adjustable formats, but they are less simplistic, stick out farther, and require occasional tightening back down to keep in place. Only drawback to this style mount is that on rare occasion the clip comes off the vent when you pull your phone off (very rare) or the less rare, you hit a REALLY hard bump and it slips off, depending on the weight of your phone. I've got an S7 Edge...happens once a month or so.

The other option would be to go w/ a similar setup that utilizes your CD slot. Again, about a 1,000 branded versions, some with slight differences in how they secure to the slot and provide stability:

I've used many different phone holders and pretty much hated them all. When I got my X, I ordered 4 different new phone holders to try out in an attempt to finally find one I liked. The one below I LOVE. It has over 27,000 reviews on Amazon with a 4.5 star rating. So you could say its pretty tried and true... I have one in my X5, 1 in each of my two work vans, and one in my rail buggy. No issues with any of them. It is a rigid design so no bouncing around like many other "flexible" holders. It has never fallen off my windshield like some others I've had. and the "no touch" phone mounting and 1-hand dis-mounting is awesome. Just my ¢02. But I would highly recommend it to anyone.

The Bimmian kit you are looking at seems very nice and I am sure you would be happy with it. I've just never used it before. I like my phone more in front of me and within my current field of view though. Like you, I drive a lot for work and am constantly looking at my phone for directions. Having my phone further out of the way where I have to take my eyes further away from the road I wouldn't like...

Interesting.

I've always felt like the cradle-based mounts were too big of a hassle while driving. Phones have never fit in the well for me, and then adjusting to get them out and back in has always lead me to stop using them.

I'd still give a magnetic mount a shot if you have never used one. It's a pretty inexpensive test.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I think I would like to keep it in the location of the right-center vent to stay out of line of sight while driving but easy enough to see if using NAV on the cell phone.

This is the holder I am using from my last vehicle until a replacement is found. I like the way it cradles the phone because it is easy to get in/out and does not block the buttons. For this vehicle I just don't want to continue giving up the accessory outlet and it doesn't sit high enough to allow easy use of the cup holder.

basilray - I hadn't considered a vent mount holder simply because it doesn't sound sturdy. They are a lot cheaper to just try though. I probably won't go with a magnetic style just because I don't want anything on my phone - it's big enough as-is.

I'm considering ordering this holder to try, it would be vent mount but utilize the style cradle that I like.

I'm going to wait a little while though to see if anyone chimes in with a review on the bimmian kit first..

I have the iOttie mount. Love it. Never has come loose, unless I remove it myself. I got one for my 635 also. They are nice mounts and not terribly expensive.

Thanks for the suggestion, will it stick anywhere on the dash or do you have it on the windshield?

It's actually attached to a "sticky pad". The pad and the mount's suction cup form a very good bond to our textured dash. If you want to windshield mount it, then you don't use the dash pad. It's a good system. Plus, it's a one-handed operation to take the phone in and out of the cradle. I highly recommend the iOttie mount.
