Having the same issue too. Is your the 4.8?
|
That's a LOT of coolant should be easy to find the leak!
|
It doesn't leak when running. Only when it sits. I'll get under there and look. Changed reservoir cap already. So much for simple fix!
Yes it's the hog. 4.8 Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
Take your intake off and have a feel around. feel under your water pump, check the hoses, bottom of the coolant expansion tank. If you don't find any leaks there, move onto the valley pan and exchange pipe.

My 08 6cyl did that as well....turned out to be the expansion tank.

The Germans are GREAT at Engineering, but not so much on design for mass production. That said, LOVE my 4.8! |
Looked around a bit with impending snowmageddon 2017. No weep hole leaks!!
Upper radiator hose is wet. Part ordered. Let's hope a few hoses solves it...... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
Uh oh. Started her up and leaks stop. But there is also a rear engine leak.
Strangest thing is it only happens when sitting and not running and warmed up. Sounds like a worn out oring somewhere! Hope it's not in the valley!! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
I got all the leaks on the N62
I have leaks as well only leaks when sitting, also very strong wheel sound from the front Passenger wheel side. ALSO when I brake hard or stand still on an slope upward I get a burning oil smell.
Took it to a local Indy shop and discovered Valley Pan leaking oil The passenger and driver front wheel hubs shot, the drivers side almost seized Both Valve covers are leaking oil Upper timing cover gaskets leaking The engine looks like new would never know all this was all happening My local Indy shop said will take 3 days pulling engine will need to take 3/4 of the engine apart These guys are certified BMW ASE mechanic They quoted me $2260 for the entire job I SAID DO IT........ Getting it back on Monday March 20th they had it from March 15th. Keep you posted |
That's a great price for all of that work!!
|
Driving the car daily. No leaks after upper and lower radiator hose change!!!
But now I have the mysterious disappearing coolant? Low coolant in reservoir. Ground is not wet. But where is the coolant going? I'm getting ready to tear into it and do the Valley pan and tube. |

My money is on the valley pan gasket.

had to fill about 1/4 gallon. 1st time. My level sensor not working from PO. I think he knew and traded it due to the dealer quote of valley pan.
But I'm going in expecting this. So, I'm ok with it. We'll see. If I need to add a second time, the coolant pipe and valley pan are coming out Just crossed 100k miles |
Checked this AM... not low but not where I topped it off yesterday.
|
2nd day. Coolant level has stabilized and remains the same as yesterday!
Looks like I won't be joining Valley pan club yet. Or it was done by PO. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
3rd day.
Coolant level still the same but I haven't let it sit a couple days either. Nor is it freezing in DC metro anymore. Hoping I don't have to revisit when the temps drop during winter |
We'll keep our collective fingers crossed.
|
4th day. Still within min / max. Maybe a little lower but it's a bunch colder today.
Going to put this valley pan on hold for now. Thanks everyone!! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
Update. I'm still good. Before morning start, still within min max.
Moving on to the timing covers and valve covers. Prolonged idle and smoke |
Uh Oh!
Added about 8 - 10 ozs of coolant. |
Valley pan going to get done.
|
At least you made it another 6 months. :D
Since you are going so far as to replace the valley pan, I strongly recommend you do the coolant transfer pipe that is under the valley pan at the same time! Just did mine and isn't too difficult and love the piece of mind. I used the All German Auto (AGA) expandable pipe. A bit more expensive than the Uro and another copy, but very well made. I highly doubt I'll have to replace this again. |

The front seal was so soft like a rolled up wet shop towel. Disintegrated. Didnt even have to use pliers to pry it out. Used the Uro pipe. Hardest part was getting front seal perfectly flat. I also used all 3 .2mm shims. I should have put them next to the lockring vs at end of pipe like instructed. Next project is valve covers and valve seals.
