4.8 E70....wheel bearings
 

Any idea how much it would cost to do front wheel bearings on a 4.8 E70?. Only hear a noise on the right front passenger side but assuming I should do both fronts.

Less than $100 to do both sides yourself. Ebay sells a pair of hub assemblies for about $80 and you'll also need 2 new locking nuts. Here's a video on how to do it. No reason to take this to someone else to do it. Very easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG4tt3afmcU

^^^ wow that actually didn't look that difficult. When I did my old E53, it was quite the chore. As he noted at the start of the video, at first it could sound like tire noise. Suggest swapping tires around to rule those out.

Yeah, the sound he describes is spot on to what mine had. I also ordered a jaw puller set and 36mm socket from Ebay that worked perfect. Both hub assemblies and the locking nuts cost me at total of $98.24. Can't imagine what a BMW dealership would've charged.

What a rip-off! I did both front for less than $100. Must be nice to have money to throw away and have others do what you could do. :)

Why attack him personally for being over charged. Ever stop to think he isn't able to do it himself? Whether physically unable or maybe had never turned a wrench.

The reason BMW dealerships charge so much for labor and parts is because too many don't take the initiative to do what they could do themselves. The dealerships then know there's many people they can take advantage of. There's no reason anybody couldn't do this unless they were physically unable to perform the required movements.

40 years ago and longer, the vast majority of men performed their own automotive work. Yes, with advanced electronics, much of that type is impossible today but for tasks not involving high-tech requirements, there's no reason not to perform a repair like this.

There's also a sense of pride in ownership when one performs their own maintenance. Today it seems more men are doing housework instead of the manly duties of the past. :)

I have no problem performing my own work and manly duties but don't see a reason to attack someone who just prefers not to work on their ride. I fully understand why the dealerships and indy mechanics charge what they do for those who don't turn a wrench.

My post was intended to give OP full prospective on what it takes whether he can or cannot DIY. I watched your video and added to my favorite list of DIY. Someone else will look for the same advice and they will value both prospective to make the right decision for themselves.

The repair I shared in my earlier post was covered by warranty while I was at work or feeding and spending quality time with the kiddos at home.

Overtime I learned that BMW is a business like others and most customers are not like you and I. They sell the convenience and it comes with a cost like many other things. That's why some people will pay $15 for a salad they could have purchased themselves for $2 (maybe $5 with the other ingredients). I jumped off the bandwagon of dealership hating and deal with them only when the money makes sense and I'm very good at that. I have done and continue to DIY, but I agree that with two babies and a wife working full time I have to multitask or pay for the service (dealer or Indy). My oldest who is 4 yo now have the mechanic vocabulary of a teenager and I'm proud of that.
