Sticky Oil Coming Off Right Indoor Passenger Door Handle
Anyone have this ? It's like a black sticky oil from the leather that gets on anyone in front passenger seat when they pull on the handle to close the door. I've taken it to both Indy and dealer and they said unfortunately you can't just replace the handle it's a whole door panel (like $700). I just moved back to Chicago from Dallas and don't drive my car but 4-5 miles per week now but it's also a pain for anyone in passenger seat like on a date, parents, etc. I've put some leather conditioner on it like the Indy did which kind of helps but not a long-term solution.

The dealer is trying to get your money. You can just change that part and you don't even need to take the door apart, just the handle.

There is a video on one of these sites very recently of a guy replacing his passenger handle for the exact same reason. It was a 5 minute job and the part was about $50, if I remember right. You pry off the cover, remove 3 Torx screws and it's done.

Without a pic...I'm not getting exactly what you're referring to...but did you look up the front door trim diagram to see if the part you inquired about is sold separately?
You don't have to depend on the dealership to determine things that can be found using the part database. You can do your research first, find what you need, then shop using the 11 digit BMW part nbr (based on your VIN) online or order from your local dealership's parts department. Click the link below if you see the part you need in the diagram...then scroll down the part nbr index (that will be below the illustration) and look for the correct color or other supplemental data that works for your vehicle. You can then take that info directly to the Parts Dept at your BMW dealership and have them order it for you. (have the last 7 digits of your VIN ready so that they can verify that you're ordering the correct part). :) |
Ok, thanks, guys. I just figured, since both my Indy (who I trust) and dealer said the same thing, that was the fix. I'll look into it more.

you're looking for part #14 on the above realoem drawing. turner motorsport sell them for around 50-60 bucks a pop

Trucky in post #3 was absolutely correct. I just so happened to be on YouTube for something completely different...but saw this thumbnail of a video appear along the side of the page.
Here's a direct link (below) to that video which shows how to replace the door handle piece that you inquired about. Again, you may need to go to the part database (enter the last 7 digits of your VIN) and find the correct 11 digit BMW part number to order one based on your interior's color & options...but it does verify that the part can be purchased separately with no need to replace the entire door card. Pull up the 11 digit BMW part number...do a google search using "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" as your search phrase...you may find some competitive pricing online which you can either order, or take the info you find and ask your local BMW dealerships parts department if they can price match it (or come close). If they can/will...it may be cheaper to order it from them (if you're a BMW CCA member...you may qualify for a discount from the dealership) and pay your local sales tax than buying online and paying shipping & handling charges. Good luck. :) I hope you find the info/video helpful: https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLK...aM&mode=NORMAL |
Get a bottle of GOOgone from any auto parts store and remove it . It's a layer that melts over time I had the same issue on all handles .

Yes the handle is user-replaceable (did it about 2 years ago) but I forgot the cost of the handle.
Basically you pry off item#15 with a trim-removal tool to get access to the 3 Torx screws. If I remember correctly, the 2 big screws are T-25 and the small one is T-8. |
The link to the 4 minute video in post #7 above also gives the sizes for the bits needed to remove the 3 screws securing the handle to the door...in case one chooses to replace it vs cleaning as as also suggested. :)
BTW...this thread revealed to me what I had not observed before...the e70's driver's door handle is designed completely different than the passenger's doors. I never noticed that it didn't have the curved pull handle (#15 & #14 in the diagram). How did I not notice that blaring difference? :yikes: |
