CIC Dead I think
No radio, screen blank, no PDC. Could this be a fuse issue? It worked on my first trip of the day yesterday but not since.
|
Does not seem like a simple fuse . I was in the same boat expect I had radio and everything else just my ccc would not turn on . For me a fuse fixed it ! But since you have no radio maybe a dead cic idrive
|
FWIW, be precise with the 'things' you(se) are discussing...a "CIC" isn't a module. Nor is a 'CIC iDrive'.
Find the PDF floating around that describes the nav/entertainment system. It will have the right terms. MOST importantly, it will show the block diagrams as to what feeds/controls what- based on what does and doesn't work, narrow it down from there. OP, what are you asking? Are you a DIYer with a computer, cable, ISTA, NCSExpert, etc etc? Or jsut 'maybe a fuse I can check before heading to the dealer'? It is helpful to let people know what you as asking for AND what level of help you require One question: do you get ANY audio whatsoever? Warnings, tones, chimes, etc. |
Did you try the reset procedure?

Its a base model unit. I don't even think its called a CIC nor CCC. It's from before their times. It's got a 6.5" screen, no nav, no dvd and no internal HD storage. Build date on the X5 is late 2011. |

Sweet! Now i'm getting a warning in the instrument cluster that my oil is low. I have no idea how low it is tho since i don't have a dip stick and the radio is dead. Good times.
|
I believe you main audio amp is/was not working. All tones, sounds along with audio (radio, CD, et) go through the amp. When the radio is off, the tones are still routed through the amp and are heard.
The oil level sensor is knwo to be an issue. No dipstick sucks. If you add a quart, does the e-level respond? I beleive the BMW procedure is to drain the oil and confirm how much comes out, then refill- if still low, replace sender. Crazy huh? |
The control display shuts off when the amp dies? I could understand not hearing the radio if the amp died but why would the display shut off?
|
It's not a CCC, it's a M-ASK. Otherwise known as iDrive Business. It's what you got when you ordered an X5 without Nav in 2012. And now its a smoking ruin. (Well it smells like smoke anyway according to the tech). New unit will be $4900. Looking into options to upgrade to CIC if possible.
|
Its completely possible, I'm running a CIC with BMW apps in my 2009. Why not go NBT though? CIC is cheaper, but if your unit is completely dead....
Here is a good thread on the CIC retro http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=580723 http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=570258 |

Next Best Thing. Theres NBT EVO, with different variations all the way to NBT EVO ID6 with the touch screen as used in the 2018 5 series.

I'm sticking with CIC retrifit from Bimmer Tech. Gonna order today most like. Still bummed that I shelled out for an extended warranty because these cars are expensive to fix and the first thing that goes is an expensive but not covered part. :dunno: At least I can upgrade tho. Can't imagine spending this bundle and ending up with the same old IDrive Business. |

Is Carplay part of ID6? |
It can be had with ID5 too. I have it on my MY 17 340 with ID5. Its just an FSC enabling code similar to how Apps worked with CIC

Upgrade to that droid unit from AVINUSA/Yokotron... $500 can't go wrong.

Did you check the fuse on the back of the M-ASK head unit.

Think I might get a used one off Ebay, seen one for about $300, would an independent shop be able to do the VIN coding? |
Depends on the indy I suppose. This is simple default coding.

Thanks |
If you get INPA/NCSExpert you can do it yourself.
The following DIY shows you how to default code BMW modules. https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?1765680 In the 9th photo, choose MASK ECU instead of DSC |
Finally got a radio. Got a part number from the dealer who tried to offer a replacement for $5300 (WTF?!!) Looking up the part number i found a refurbished radio from a BMW online parts retailer and grabbed that instead, $850 with $1100 core charge). It's installed and seems to be working. Some menu items don't seem to all be there but that's OK.
Biggest issue is my satellite radio isn't working. Sirius can't send it a signal, I have to pull the radio to get the radio ID. Is this normal? Did the tech forget to hook something up or check a box on install? |
Sounds normal to me. Sirius needs to know the radio ID is associated with a paid account before it'll let you listen to their tunes. With some menu items missing it sounds like unit wasn't coded to your car. You might want to ask installer what coding he did if any. If you post on one of the BMW coding/programming/diagnostic forums you should be able to find someone in your area to code it per the DIY in my previous post.
|
Oh I know why they need a radio ID I was just wondering if pulling the radio is the only way to find it.
The shop that installed the radio and did the coding had never done it before. I have a feeling they may have missed a step. I called and asked if there was a checkbox for enabling satellite radio and they said there wasn't but i'm dubious now. I'm going to use your link and try to find someone in Phoenix who can check out the coding, make sure it was done right. Thanks |
OK, that makes more sense. I misunderstood. I presume your previous M-ASK had Sat radio. I would think that you should see the sat radio option on the new unit and it would warn you about no activation and perhaps show you the ID No. This might be another indication coding wasn't performed. I think the early cars had a separate satellite tuner in the spare tire well, not sure when this became integrated in the head unit. ID No is likely on the tuner if your MY has one.
|
Ok.
I have the radio id but Sirius still cant talk to it. They say I should see the ESN on the Manage Subscription screen but it's blank. Is adding the radio ID a step in the 'coding the radio to your car' process? I'm wondering if my next step is to call the shop that did the install or call the BMW parts department that sold me the refurbished radio. At this point I don't know if it was a poor refurb or a mistake by a first time installer? Thanks for any help. |
Got it all sorted. Now it's time to sell.
|
How? Reinstall the FCS code in the new unit?

Brought it to the dealer. Turns out the independent installer didn't perform all the steps.
