Based on the East Penn battery chart in post #2...their 95R battery has a length of 394mm (or 15½ inches)...so if the Bosch S5A15 is 393mm...then it would be considered a 95R/H9 battery...that's if it is sold here in the USA.

The (new?) BMW 105AH battery PN 61212353814 is 15.5". Fits in LCI E70, someone mentioned that may not fit earlier years. Dealer was cheaper than others, no one else had 105AH battery and most 92/95AH were more $ than the 105AH @ dealer.

A quick google search suggests it is possibly not widely availableas this part number. My dealer had 2 in stock.

Retail list was $191 or so.
Car quest napa and interstate were all over $ for the 95a, Baxters was under $for 95a.

From my own experience, H9 fits, but you can't use both battery hold down clamps. The battery obscures the one at the narrow end. The space is more than adequate. I'm just running one clamp. No issues.

I'm about to get a battery that I'm hoping will fit in my 2001 3.0i E53.

Currently in there is an H8, wanted to see if an H9 would fit. Nothing completely conclusive found online here, so I went and took a look. Here's what I found:

The overall length (side to side) of the rectangular cavity is greater than the ~15.5" length of an H9. Maybe 1/4-1/2" to spare, total on both ends.

There may be some taper so the opening at the bottom is slightly less than this, but not much. But that does not matter because ...

The problem / issue is that on the left side of the box, in the middle (fore-aft), there is a protruding rectangle of half an inch or so, running top to bottom. And then down at the bottom, there are some fins that stick out about 3/4 inch. The fins are what the left side of the bottom of the battery butts up against, while being clamped on the right side.

My conclusion is that if I really wanted to fit an H9 in there, I could cut down those plastic fins, and that plastic protruding rectangle, and I could stuff the H9 in there. Yes, the rectangular box is overall big enough.

But thinking that it is designed to have some air gap in there, provided by the fins, etc., for convective cooling, I think I will live with an H8.

BTW, I already have a pretty new H8 in the X5, but am about to buy a battery for my Cayenne, which specs an H9, but actually has an H8 in it right now. Hoping to keep things interchangeable for debugging, I'll go ahead and buy an H8 for the Cayenne. So if I ever get a mysterious electrical issue in either car which may be battery related, I will just swap them and see what happens.

FWIW, Advance Auto has the H9 AGM. They rate it at 100 AH and I've had one in my mom's F25 for a year without a problem. Retail is $195 but search for coupons and it will usually come in around $146 + tax.

You're discussing the intricacies of the e53 X5 battery fitment on an e70 X5 forum...but as you've discovered...the H9/95R battery is too large (length-wise) for the e53 X5 battery well and doesn't fit properly due to the things you mentioned. Those "fins" (as you mentioned) on the left side are part of the design that helps secure the battery along with the tie down clamp on the other side.



If you try to slide a 95R/H9 battery in the e53 X5 battery compartment/well...then there's no room for the battery hold down clamp and like you mentioned, the battery will be sitting on top of those fins (see pics below). And it might be a little tight for the vent tube on the left side, too:



If you have an e70 X5...then you can use either the 49/H8 or the 95R/H9 because the battery well has enough room for either. :).

I had no problem recharging my battery with a standard 12V charger. My E70 is 2012 and I believe the battery is original - still says BMW on it.

For a replacement on my son's E53, I found Costco to be the least cost for an Interstate with a decent warranty - needed to be ordered though. Ended up at the local tractor supply (rural king) for $114 USD out the door. Not sure what the amp-hour ratings were. Never thought to check other than the battery group size and CCAs.

Is your 'standard 12v charger' capable of charging an AGM battery? If it is, then it should work fine.

If your car was service by a BMW dealer begore you purchased it, not surprising to have a BMW branded battery....
