Bluetooth question?
Hi everyone, I’m new to the E70 section but not the forum or BMW’s. I just picked up a 2008 4.8 premium sport, love it! So my iPhone 7 synced right up for phone use however no music. I have a USB port and aux in in my center consul so I thought I would just plug in USB port to phone and although it’s charging the car has no idea it’s there. I can play through the auxiliary input but that’s it for now.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get the car to recognize my music? TIA, nice to be back around Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
You probably need a combox, which was not available until 10/2010 build dates.
Search here: BMW Retrofits | CIC Navigation | NBT Navigation | Combox | ConnectedDrive | bimmerretrofit.com |
2008 had Crapple support as an option. I used to sync my friends iphone with my old 08. That said it is only for music playback that is on your phone not streaming.
Kaput was correct. You need to do a combox upgrade which I do not think is possible without CIC iDrive. Meaning 2008 has a DVD based CCC Navigation/iDrive. The CIC Hard Drive Navigation/iDrive was introduced in 2010 and the Streaming audio was sometime later....I believe on later model LCI E70's. |
Yea, build date 10/2010 was the introduction of the CIC navigation, and bluetooth streaming was I think 6 months later.
I forgot about the differences of CCC and CIC and when they were introduced. You best bet, is to find some form of bluetooth adapter you can run into your aux input and just stream to it. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrLU0-iMOm4 |
You can confirm with the VIN decoder, but USB port in arm rest means you've got the 6FL option. Connecting iPhone via usb cable should let you play music/Pandora/iheart etc from phone. USB port should show up in iDrive also.

Just an FYI: BT music streaming (A2DP) didn't come to market until 2010...which is why, as mentioned above, you need the newer combox that came with the late build 2010 models.
Sometimes its easy to forget that BT music streaming didn't come at the same time of BT telephony. BT telephony first came to BMWs in mid to late 2004 (as the 2005 model year began). Then A2DP (bluetooth music streaming) developmental technology came approximately 5 years later. |
Thanks guys, super helpful!!
Researching the com box I would loose the bmw assist and sos and I’m Not of fan of gaining one thing and loosing 2. That blackberry music however is PERFECT!!! I’m going that route. Thanks for all the input Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Thank you all for all the helpful information!
For now the easy way was the blackberry, I picked one up on my way home and it works great. I’ll do some more research on the combox however what ive read so far is I will loose sos and BMW assist if I install that. Seems sad to pay so much and then loose features. For now this works fine, I’m not sure what will happen when the phone rings but....... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Well it worked well with the motor off, I just ran an errand it the thing picks up some interference.
I don’t know why I can’t plug my iPhone into the USB in the armrest and play that way?? What will that usb sync up to? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
