E70 Pre-Purchase question
So I am thinking of moving up to an E70 from a E53 '04 4.4i
I am sure the question has been asked here already. But just wanted to get some ideas of the kinds of issues that are known for that generation. Or must do if getting one that is almost at 100K Looking at the 3.0i/xDrive N52 Engine or the xDrive35i N55 Engine. Thanks |
I would not recommend you buying any E70 that has almost 100K miles based on my personal experience. I have a 2010 Diesel that was so reliable and problem free until almost 100K (All sorts of CEL started at 90K miles). Fortunately, couple of them were covered under BMW recall or warranty extension.

35 seems a pretty reliable motor. Some waterpump issues, but this seemed a mfg defect- once replaced it isnt like they keep failing
Some transmissions had an odd 'lag' thing going on... hit or miss, fixes also hit or miss. Just pay attention when test driving. MAKE SURE you get the car fully to temp. IMO if you are a DIYer, this will be no worse than any modern car. Give or take. If you are serious abut buying a BMW, buy the iCarly first- will let you scan used cars and see whats up. |
Bought our X535d at 113k now at 148k has been very reliable. I replaced the glow plug module 1k ago as the only repair besides normal maintenance. The urea system has always shown MIL which is of no consequence to us as we do not have e-tests here and the system will soon be deleted and tuned out. I would not hesitate to buy another. BMW gasoline sixes have also been proven to be reliable as well. This is our 5th Bimmer.

A 100K 6cyl BMW is just fine. I make a point of avoiding the Turbo Charged models. Due to a nightmare of an N55 335 my husband had. The Straight 6 engine is doggy but gets the job done and is a snap to work on. If you buy one, make sure that is has been taken care of. That is whats key. They're good cars. As others have said, buy a scanning tool to see whats going on with the vehicle. If youre going with a non-lci 07-10, make sure its a 2010 as you will get the better navigation.

Thanks for the feedback. I already have the Carly tool for my existing E53/E60. It's always good to know what you are getting into so you plan for it.
