Trunk closing looks abnormal

Hi all, quick question. Is our trunk supposed to shut pretty hard? My tailgate slams so hard it doesn’t do the “sucking in” part for the soft close like some other cars' tailgates do. Is that normal?

Here is my tailgate. Notice how it just drops and slams at the end.

Here is tailgate of Q60. Notice how slow it is and how it catches and sucks in at the end.

I replaced the lock actuator since the "trunk open" light came on. Recently, the light came back on so I brought the car back to the shop. The shop says that the lock actuator is working and suggested it might be a faulty latch. But I think the latch is working. The light went away after I gave it a little push. The "trunk open" light is intermittent so am wondering if it looks normal to you? Is there a way the dealer can adjust how fast/slow the tailgate comes down?

That’s exactly how mine has closed since I purchased the car new in 2013. I have soft close doors which close more similarly to the rear hatch on the Infiniti you showed but my rear hatch is more abrupt, just like your X5. I don’t mind it and I do like the speed with which it closes. Can’t help you with the “trunk open” warning, though.

OK thank you for verifying. My buddy looked at it and said that my tailgate closes too abruptly to be normal. He said, the tailgate usually slowly goes down, and then has small movement when it shuts, like the Infiniti does.

Also, on the Infiniti, if you have an object in place when the tailgate is closing, it opens up. On the X5, it will take off your arm if you put it in the way of the tailgate closing. BMW doesn't have anti-pinch feature in the tailgate? Is this a safety issue?

Mine stops for my arm. It won’t stop before it hits your arm but it will stop as soon as it does hit.

I wouldn't put up with that slam it feels like the rubber stops are not set tall enough.

That seems abnormal to me. The wife's 2010 definitely closes more gently than that. Not as gently and nice as my E53, but still not like in your video.

As to the trunk open warning not sure. Sometimes we get a situation where the top will not close and will not respond to the switch. That is always solved by reclosing the bottom of the clam shell more vigorously. Perhaps it's something I need to adjust or something but it rarely comes up and has not reached annoyance critical level yet.

How would I adjust so it closes more softly?

Mine will stop and reverse if there’s a shopping bag in the way. It takes some resistance, but it will definitely stop before it crushes you.

As for the video, mine with 138k miles closes just slightly more gracefully than that. But it still finishes with a bang.

I just did a quick search on YouTube for e70 remote tailgate close (took about 10 seconds to type into the search field)...and 4 back to back videos of e70 X5 tailgates...all closed just like it did in your video. (Selected the ones that were approx 20 seconds or less...so a total of about 1 minute revealed the results). So your tailgate appears to be normal. :)

Here's a direct link to my youtube search where you can see a list of videos that shows other e70 X5's tailgates closing with a "thud". :D

Mine closes with a thud and I just assumed it was normal. There's a little bit of increase in velocity as it gets closer to latching.

And same as everyone else if I grab the tailgate while it's closing it'll stop and reverse.
