The heat never gets hot, regardless of setting. Didn’t realize you were referring to the FSR - these symptoms do not match typical FSR problems, and yes I can see why people might dub it a porcupine. Upon checking again, when I crank the temp from 72 up to 84, the fan speed will increase one or two levels. I will look to see if there’s anything impairing the temp probe, but at this stage I’m leaning towards a water valve issue. The air is basically cold or at best lukewarm when set to 73, when it should feel warm.

It "feels like" the water valve to the heater core to me

Check the heater valve. Sounds like the same problem I had last week. The rubber bellows desintegrated and jammed the valves.
Easy to check. You’ll lose about a pint of coolant. Run the coolant purge procedure after you put it back together.
Wife is now happy again. Total cost $80 with a gallon of BMW coolant.

Th manual mode sort of ignores the digital temp. I have found that you need to adjust the temp (for manual mode) by going to settings/climate/ either driver or passenger air temp. You just spin the idrive dial after getting there. Good luck.

Yeah, I’ve got the idrive settings turned all the way up but I appreciate the input

Yep, seems likely to be the issue. New one is sitting in my passenger seat. Going in tomorrow.

Did you get a chance to replace the valve?

I did, meant to post already... That was the issue. Apparently the automatic climate control was throttling back the fan even when set to highest heat because the air wasn’t getting very warm...which is is supposed to do to avoid blowing cool or cold air on you. Appreciate everyone’s input.

I've got this problem before and the solution is I changed (heater control valve) and that’s it
