Two-toned my interior
 

So I've never really liked single color interiors other than black. I've two-toned the interiors of two other of my BMWs so I took a stab with my X5's sea of tan/beige.

I removed the door panels, prepped each and vinyl painted each. Very happy with the result which is OEM like. Just the right balance now of tan and black.

That looks nice actually. What was your process? How does it feel? Any insight on how it’s wearing?

Ive always been a fan to two tone interiors. Looks good!

Simple process.

1) remove door panel
2) scuff up panel areas to be painted
3) clean panel thoroughly
4) tape / cover areas not to be painted
5) paint several layers with duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint ($5 a can)
6) let dry
7) re-install and enjoy

Door panel feels exactly the same and the color match with the OEM black upper portion of the panel is very close. Don't know yet about wear but if you believe what you read and see on youtube, expect the job to last about a year or two based on use. I drive the X5 maybe once a week so I'm guessing I'll get some longer use.

I'm not a fan of two-tone, unless the color difference it subtle or mild, but it does look nice.


Did you do any kind of sanding/wet sanding?

I repainted several pieces of interior trim using the same process described above about 8 months ago, because of the soft touch peeling, and it still looks great.

I would imagine if you keep it clean, out of severe heat and apply some type of decent hydrating product twice a month, it'll last twice as long or more than the average.

To scuff up the door panel, I used some 500 grit sand paper I had. No wet sanding.

And I plan on painting some of my interior plastics as well as they are peeling too. You would think BMW could figure that issue out by now as this isn't a new phenomenon.
