Towing - Everything that's required
EDIT: I would like to make this a "sticky"-like post that contains everything required for setting up an E70 to tow. I will be updating this post as new information flows in from other members.
So I am finally getting my E70 ready for towing. I've read countless threads about towing and what's required, but I just wanted to summarize and verify with the resident towing experts. What I know for sure is required: - Trailer Hitch Receiver: BMW Part No. 71600440592 (I decided to go with Curt Hitch #13077) - Wiring Harness & Module: BMW Part No. 71602156526 (note you can buy the Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring Kit as a package with BMW Part No. 71602156525) - Coding: Can this be done with the Carly adapter? Also, does someone have a list of exactly what needs to be coded to each module? What I'm unsure about: - Trailer Brakes: Is a trailer brake controller required? Will electronic trailer brakes work without a separate controller using the parts listed above? Heaviest thing I'll be towing is a car trailer and car for 20 miles or so. Thanks everyone. |
Subbed. I've had the hitch and the harness in my garage for months.

Wiring kit purchased. Into it $390 now. It's my understanding that the wiring kit (part no. 71602156526) comes with the towing module, correct?
Also, I will be continually updating the original post with information to make it easier for others to gather information about towing with an E70. |
Yes, the module comes with the wiring kit. I used a Prodigy RF (wireless) electric brake controller. However, you will have to use an alternate vehicle to pair the brake controller initially.

However, I do intend on adding a trailer brake and going with the Prodigy RF. Having said this, my e70 tows my bikes and trailer effortlessly. :D |
This information is readily available on the forum if you search.
You'll need a controller to pull a loaded car trailer. I'd recommend hard wiring one. It isn't that difficult, it's pretty cheap, and you won't be messing around with a wireless one when you need it. I put mine by the obd port and it's out of the way. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk |
