BimmerGeeks OBD Tool the way to go?

So is this considered the best diagnostic tool available for home use now?

I have their cable (works very well) and have been waiting for this app for a while.

I'm disappointed in the app (for now) and here's why:

I have ISTA, INPA, OBD Fusion (Paid), and Carly w/Carly OBD reader.

ISTA - complicated/detailed work
INPA - quick and dirty work
Carly - reliable, but overly complicated UX when mobile (away from home)
OBD - quick and easy when mobile and/or don't want to get the laptop out

  1. Just normal everyday monitoring while driving, I like OBD as it's quick, easy, and provides all the live data I like to see. I can open it up and in seconds be looking at meaningful numbers. As soon as I used BimmerGeeks app, OBD would no longer connect. Restarted the phone, re-paired the bluetooth adapter, uninstalled BimmerGeeks, then finally ended up having to re-install OBD. Grrr. Carly had no issues.
  2. While I completely understand the cost of app dev, all you can do is look at menus with BimmerGeeks without paying for a license. You can't actually see what 'live data' is available or get an idea of how the other functions work unless you watch a YouTube demo (not gonna do it).
  3. There's no 'Exit' or 'Close' or 'Disconnect' button. At least that I saw anywhere.
  4. As far as I could tell, you must use BimmerGeeks OBD adapter, which is extra $$ if you want wireless. I used their cable connected to my phone.
In case anyone cares - Android Nougat (7.0), Sony Xperia. I will end up getting a license and maybe the OBD adapter, just not sure when yet.

Thanks for the feedback..
But confused as ever..

Looking for a tool to diagnose issues..
And do some coding..
That doesn't break the bank..

:dunno:

Do you have a spare laptop or would you want to get one for cheap? This looks to be great for the price, and he'll send you an FSC code and a link to update your maps to 2018-1 for the CIC (you need a couple USB sticks to complete the transfer of map data)

Summary of what I think of BimmerGeeks is basically their app is too new (to many bugs) and too costly to go for it. But, they'll improve quickly I imagine so I'll be watching to see when the right time to buy would be.
Carly is decent enough for simply coding. Beyond that some of the free/downloadable software (NCS expert, etc) would be great, if you are comfortable going that route/have the skills to set it up.

I find it annoying that you have to use their Bluetooth adapter for it. Meanwhile my konnwei obd2 bt adapter works fine with an older version of Carly. For monitoring, I like torque pro with custom pids.

The BG cable is great. Get that and then play around with the different software to decide what you like. I own Carly and never use it. I like ISTA+ for scanning and NCS for coding. In the past these needed a separate laptop but that is no longer the case as they all seem to support W10 X64 now.

Can the Bimmergeeks bluetooth adapter be used with ISTA+ and Windows 10? Or is it just limited to the android-only app?
