Poss to swap in comfort seats?
 

Recently moved up to a 2010 X35D (from a 2003 3.0 E53) and I am a bit disappointed with the seats. Stumbled onto an E70 part out with comfort seats and wondering if it’s possible or worth it?

Done? Not sure. Drawing a blank now, but someone I know from the M5 world in NC may have attempted this in his E70. Posted here or on bimmerfest.

Shouldnt be too difficult since I believe it was a standalone option for all or most years. That being said, I'd spend some time in the wiring schematics/parts diagrams to see whats going on for power sourcing, and make sure that there are no year breaks in SRS equip (occupancy sensors etc). Additionally, there are Comfort seats, Comfort seats with heat, and Lux seats with heat/vent/activity. Theyll all be slightly different so go into that with eyes open.

Usually...the replacement seat is an easy swap as long as everything the seat has that is additional to the original seat...is contained on the seat's control module. If it has functions that are controlled on the panel below the radio controls (like active seat, ventilation features, heat, etc) and your model DOES NOT have those buttons in that panel...then more will be required.



But I would definitely check www.newtis.info for wiring schematics etc...as well as continue to google/internet search for anyone else that may have already gone down this road.

What type of seats do you have stock on your 2010 X35D?

Look under the front of your seats. Below the front edge cover there is a yellow connector. Compare the pins in yours to what the donor seats have. Make sure car is off when you do this otherwise you will get an airbag light.

I swapped power/lumbar/heated seats into my power only E90 and a few wires were missing. Heated seats added a 2nd run for power and ground.

And depending on what you have now, a few options may need to be coded into your car. And finally I can't remember if all E70 have active headrests. If your donor seats are newer this won't be an issues.

Mine have heat. lumbar & active headrests but no thigh support. Very similar to what I had in the E53 (sans active headrest), which I always thought were very comfortable (70k miles in 3 years). Thing is, they just aren't very comfortable in the E70. Maybe another 7 yrs of my big butt would help, but would rather have that comfy BMW foam & leather hugging me now. ;). I've always had an issue in both X5's with my right knee getting stiff/sore after 2-3hrs, which doesn't happen in other vehicles (even Mini or <cringe>Sienna</cringe>

The donor seats look like ventilated comfort seats from what looks like a 4.8 M-sport. I could live without ventilation if not plumbed for it, but was mostly asking about the coding. Nothing happens in this E70 without the consent of HAL (seems deserving of another authoritarian-German name :D) which is new to me.

To circle back, I found a set of non-ventilated, multi-function seats & completed the swap in a couple of hours. All the buttons/adjustments work with no coding! Very big improvement in comfort!

:thumbup: Thanks for the follow up. They look great and the 20-way MC seats get great accolades for a good reason. ;)


Finding 20-way MC seats that were optioned similarly to your existing seats also made the swap easier vs having the "active" & "ventilation" options which would probably require additional wiring and control panel modules since they are controlled by buttons on the center panel instead of the seat itself.
