Ride comfort - 19 inch run flat versus 20 not run flat
 
I'm considering purchasing 20 inch rims with Continental DW06 (not run flats) tires to replace my 19 inch staggered run flats.

I live in the city and was wondering if the decreased comfort of the 20 inch rims would be negotiated by the none run flat tires. Some of the roads I go on are bumpy and have small potholes.

I wouldnt.

Handling will be worse; ride harsher; more likely to damage rims on potholes.

Its an SUV for chrissakes.

I don't think you will feel decreased comfort especially having the DW06 tires. An inch difference in wheels along with good tires, you will be fine. I own both sizes and as long as you have proper alignment and good tires you're good.

OE 19s have and OD of 29". On a 19" rim that's 5 inches of sidewall

OE 20s have an OD around 28,7. On a 20" rim that's 4.35 inches of sidewall

4.35 vs 5.

I'd probably agree you may not feel much harshness difference. Handling I can't say. (I define handling as how the car drives at the limits of adhesion, not how the steering feels on the highway...) If you are also changing square to staggered and going wider, that may be more of a factor.

I completely disagree. Ride will be *improved*. The problem is the run-flats. Not the size of the rims.

OP - You will need to optimize the tire pressure as a slight variation tends to have quite a large effect on the handling with the Conti. I recommend 35 psi in front and 38 in rear with the 20" rim and Conti DWS. Tested with the BMW OEM 214 rim

If you have the dynamic handling system, it will be even less noticeable due to the active dampers and anti-roll stabilization.

The problem is likely crappy tires and not "run flat" tires. Only assuming since when anybody says "run flat" I guess we're all supposed to know what brand, model and size tire they mean???

Perhaps evaluate what you're trying to accomplish. 20" tires have every possibility of being worse than "run flat" tires depending on the brand, model and size . . .

People endlessly refer to 'the run flats' as if it is a tire model.

It is a FEATURE people.
