Third limp mode already
 

Hi friends,

I experienced this limp mode for the third time already. Always happened on the same highway road which has a rough surface. The first and second time, i panicked. But now i am pissed off because i dont know what causes it. My permanent error codes are :

GWS / A82E (interlock E faulty)
EGS / 4E86 (solenoid valve 3)

But when it enters limp mode, all bunch of indicator lighs turned on like a christmas tree.

I have a problem with rear right shock absorber. Its making alot of “thud” sound on rough or bumpy road.

The limp mode usually started when it is on 3000rpm and i accelerate more and it wont change gear. Then limp mode started.

Any of you guys have experienced this? Please help.

Those are transmission codes.
You might be low on transmission fluid as I had this happen when I didn't fill mine on a proper level surface. Once I rechecked fluid level and filled it didn't happen anymore and that was a year+ ago.

I would get the transmission fluid changed. You don't have to drop the pan, just drain the old fluid and fill it with ZF lifeguard 6 fluid. It requires ista-d/rheingold or a scanner that can read transmission temperature, to ensure you fill it to proper level.

I'd do a very careful check of all the wiring harnesses to engine and transmission .....

The first one (gws) is gear selector switch code, and the second one is transmission code. I am aware of that, i have to replace the gear selector, and as for the transmission code, ive tried everything but replacing the mechatronics.

Ive replaced the fluid, replace the seal, and everything. It still pop up. It runs fine tho. No stutter no weird jerks, nothing.

My mechanic says that soon i have to replace the mechatronics which is so expensive. At least for me.

The problem is i dont know what triggers the limp mode. Is there any way to diagnose what triggers the limp mode?

Ah thats a thing to do, but also time consuming, expensive, and no guarantee that that is the reason my x5 went into limp mode. I just want to find what triggers the limp mode.

I think I read of some transmission connectors that went bad due to cracked plastic and corrosion. Not sure if it was here or another forum. Might have been another vehicle besides the E70. You could start checking the connectors and wiring for the transmission.

Sorry I don't know what exactly causes the limp mode.

Yes, we all want that 'silver bullet' diagnosis.

How old is your battery? Alternator? With any limp mode on a modern BMW... Those are my usual starting points. We just had trans failsafe and codes on the wife's '10 diesel. Nothing since changing the battery a few months ago. Checked battery coding and it was time. First battery got 75000ish miles. We just replaced this one at 155000 miles. So seems they are good for about 75k miles.

BTW, also had a couple of "warning chimes not available" errors that helped point to battery. Yours may not be electrical system problem... But worth checking.

No i havent. And my mechanic says that i cant just replace 1 bad solenoid. I have to replace the whole mechatronic. Is that not true?
