2009 35d Engine Noise
 

This engine noise on our 2009 35d w/83K miles has been getting louder. Given its age I decided to start by replacing wear items. So I’ve ordered new belts, idler and belt tensioner which should be here by next weekend. But I’m getting concerned that this might more serious e.g. alternator bearings, water pump, etc.

The good news is that the ratchety sound is now gone :)
The bad news is we don’t have A/C because I couldn’t get the new A/C belt on :(

Before I started taking it apart, I should have used my inspection camera to check the fasteners on the crankshaft Vibration Balancer to verify that there was an easy way to rotate the crankshaft while installing the A/C belt.

So now I’m trying to find a tool to either:
1- install the A/C belt without rotating the crankshaft or
2 - turn the cranksaft while installing the stretch fit A/C belt.

These are three special tools that claim to install the A/C belt without rotating the crankshaft of an M57 engine. They are listed in increasing cost from roughly $100—$230. Quite a spread for tools that look very similar. Has anyone had personal experience with any of these tools? If so, was it on a 35d?

I had found these in my internet search. But I was wary for a couple of reasons.
1 - The Lisle Stretch Belt Tool gets mixed reviews from those who have tried/used them. Did you have any trouble with it?

2 - The photos that accompany the “M57 Tool for rotating the crank” don’t show the “business end” of the tool. Did you use a 1/2” breaker bar, ratchet, ...? And how much clearance is required? IOW can this tool combo be used from below without pulling the fan housing?

The Kommen BMA1408 AC Belt Install tool arrived yesterday (1st photo ACBeltTool.jpg). I had hoped that I could use the tool from below. But there is simply not enough clearance because of the front sway bar. So I removed the fan housing again to make room to install the AC belt.

The tool fit into the 35d crankshaft damper nicely, after removing the outer ring (2nd photo ACBeltTool2.jpg). The installation was really simple. I just installed the AC belt onto the AC compressor and started the belt onto the damper over the AC Tool (photo 3 Install.jpg). I used a 1/2in ratchet to turn the tool until the friction caused the engine to turn, then continued turning until the belt was fully installed (photo 4 Installed.jpg).

Does anyone know know if this tool will also work for N52 engine. I have 2 x5, one is a 35D and the other is a 3.0i. They are both due for new belts and tensioner.
