E53 wheels on E70
 

Hello.
I want to buy 20 inch wheels style 168, i like them very much, but they are for e53 and i have an e70.
I read that e70 center bore is 74.1 and e53 72.6.
Is there any chance they would fit my BMW ?

No. You would need to have the E53 wheel hub openings bored to 74.1mm. Or, assuming the E53 wheel's offsets support it, a hub-centric wheel spacer with a 74.1mm bore on the back and a 72.6mm hub flange on the front could be used. If you really like the wheels, I'd get them properly bored.

You could try to find replica 168's. I find many of the replicas are bored with the larger hub size so they fit more vehicles. They'll be lower quality than OE's though, so likely heavier and require more weights to balance. Just a thought though.

i've had wheels bored out on some old BBS wheels for about $25 each at a local machinist.

Will they interfere with transfer case, suspension and so on ? I would personally prefer the center hub rings and the staggered look but im afraid about the damage they could do to car

Transfer case? No. But do keep the front and rear axles at the same tire diameter, of course. Probably be safe using E53 sizes.

Suspension? Not really. Think about what the spacer does. All it does is change the effective offset of the wheel. Your spacers will also change the hub diameter but ignore that for a moment. As long as you stay within reason, especially if the final offset remains within a factory wheel parameter for your specific vehicle, there should be no ill effects. If you move to the extreme like the "stanced" crowd, or whatever it's called, then yes, you will adversely affect handling and suspension components.

A spacer and wheel arrangement will be a weaker overall assembly than a wheel alone but the combination works fine. Always use adequate length wheel bolts with ANY wheel spacer.

That's a bummer, I always liked 168s and thought they would look good on an e70. Now I know why no one does it.. soo you should do it :)

I bored out E53 wheels myself for my E70. You’re only taking off 0.75mm of aluminum from the hub bore surface. Easy to do with a harbor freight barrel sanding kit and a cheap corded drill. Unless you were completely ignorant and took all the material off of one side of the hub bore, it’s pretty much impossible to mess up.

Wheel spacers will not impact transfer case at all. Running different diameter tires front-to-rear is what destroys transfer cases.

I think this was done after purchase from me. THAT was the buyer’s plan, at least. Glad to see it likely happened!

I agree. There are a couple E53 wheels that I like. Might prompt me to investigate their use on my E70 further.
