It was very easy and only took a couple hours. As long as you're somewhat careful removing the old drive and inserting the new drive and follow the directions exactly, there really isn't much of anything that can go wrong. You'll always have your original drive to put back in if the new drive doesn't work.

Note that not every PATA drive will work. My first attempt failed because I tried to use a cheap drive I picked up off eBay. I then tracked down the same drive described in the original thread and it worked perfectly. I still have my original drive in a desk drawer just in case...

I probably would have gone that route if it had been posted before I did my upgrade.

Had to go ahead and read through the last couple of pages there. With the IDE connector it looks like people are saying the speed difference between original and the mSATA SSD is pretty much negligible. Is that what you're seeing too? Then it just seems to give us a backup of the HDD vs. any real speed increase.

Please share your experience and any details too.

I did this upgrade shortly after I bought my X5, so I didn't have much experience with the navigation boot times for the original HDD. I will say that I haven't experienced what I consider excessive boot times, so this could very well be an improvement over the original HDD.

That said, the more significant benefit may be the larger partition for storing music.

Yes. This upgrade increases the size of the music partition from 12GB to 56GB.

I did the ssd upgrade last year to my E70 but I cant really say it helped anything.

It doesn't seem to be any faster. I don't have to worry about the hard drive failing from a bump or something now but it didn't really effect the speed of anything that I can tell.
