X5 4.8i: Is it possible to remove oil filter without draining oil?
 

So during my last oil change for my 2007 X5 4.8i, I think I forgot to replace the small oil filter housing drain o-ring.. now it's showing a little bit of seepage .. not too bad ..

so I am wondering, is it possible to just remove the oil filter housing without draining the pan? I know I would lose the oil in the filter housing so will need to top off after reinstalling ..

Don't think there is anyway to do that...
Assuming it's hasn't been very long time/miles, just drain the oil into a clean container, make the correction with the filter and re-fill.

At the end of the day, it's just motor oil... as long as you keep it clean, no big deal.

No. there is no way. Only thing you could do is drain the oil into a clean pan and reuse but you would have to make sure there isn't any debris or unwanted things in it. For example, when you buy a brand new oil drain pan there are plastic shavings on the inside. You don't want that back in the engine.

Correct. It's under the X5. Oil will pour out if you take the oil filter housing off to get to that o ring. Only option would be to catch all the oil and reuse it if it was debris free. Or do a whole new oil change. Did my post make it confusing?

ok allow me to clarify :) .. I want to replace the oring on the filter housing so I would need to take out the filter housing .. my original question was: "would i need to drain the pan first" ..cause in the x5 4.8i, the oil filter is located near the pan .. i am aware that some oil will drain from the filter housing itself, which is ok. my only concern was that the oil in the pan will come out as well thru the filter (which I didn't think it would) ..

It wouldn't, as it wont siphon the pan. Of course, be safe with a large enough drain pan, just in case, but I've never seen that happen. I periodically will change my filter between oil changes and haven't had a problem with my 4.8.

Haha all kinds of side tracks here...
ARD - Unicorn meant if a brand new plastic "drain pan" was used, it could have plastic shavings in it, which could contaminate oil to be re-used, so be careful.
