4.8 N62 engine Knock/Ping
Does anyone experience this from time to time during acceleration?
I'm running my usual Shell V-power 91. Not sure if its Vanos Timing, knock sensors, etc. No codes coming up at all, and i'm using Rheingold to diagnose. |
Mine pings under light acceleration, and it gets worse the hotter it get outside. If I push my foot further down on the accelerator, the pinging stops.
No codes. Spark plugs were replaced 30k miles ago. Didn’t change much. |
Thanks. My old M54 motor used to do the same, just wondering if its just something some BMW engines are prone to do?

What happens if you go up octane? 93,94? Knocking like that on an N62 engine isn't what usually happens.

In most modern engines there are knock sensors, they will retard timing well before you can hear any knock.
If they are broken, the DME should AUTOMATICALLY pull timing (dramatically) to avoid engine damage. I dont understand how a modern BMW engine can ping or knock. Anyone know how this occurs, im all ears |

Higher octane, not much difference, and i have also tried to reset the adaptations. My fuel trims are low, smooth running values are all close to zero. I'm lost! |
There is a TON of misinforamtion about this.
Changing knock sensors is a fools errand UNLESS you have knock sensor fault codes. https://f01.justanswer.com/Montmotor...ck+Control.pdf It isnt knock. |

It’s only audible if the windows are down and you’re driving next to a wall of some kind for the sound to bounce off of. |

Very true about changing the 4 little microphones, as i have no knock errors. i just figured the system would react a lot quicker. They must be working as the DME does adjust and it eventually goes away. I know up here in Canada also that our fuel quality is not the greatest. |
