P0087

Yesterday while driving on the highway the engine malfunction indiciator came on and the car went into limp mode. I limped the car home and pull a P0087 code from the ODBII. The funny thing is that the code clears when i restart the car, however under hard acceleration it trips into limp mode. Since that is the only code that pops up, I was thinking to just replace the fuel pressure sensor. But my gut tells me that I will need to replace the HPFP. Any thoughts?

If replacing the pump is the case, which one of these products from ECS Tuning should I do?

Yikes, is there no happy medium between the two?

With 135,000 on the clock and this thing moving fuel, I’m sure you will need all of the gaskets and o-rings also, but at nearly $600 I might go with the less expensive pump and see if ECS also sold just the gasket and o-rings - may... save you a few bucks.

That said, I would check the fuel pressure at the rail and also maybe consider checking the fuel pressure regulator. Wondering if it’s a fuel delivery issue coming from the pump or the FPR not holding pressure at the rail... - that said, I have the 4.4 so I’m not 100% sure on how yours is setup.

1. There are places OTHER than ECS tuning

2. Are you just assuming 'might be a pump-thing, so lets buy something with 'pump' in the name from ECS'????

3. Maybe get a diagnosis, THEN decide what parts you need.

1. I am very aware there are other place to purchase part other than ECS Tuning. If you have a better option please point me in the right direction.

2. No I am not assuming, if you read my post, it says that i will start by replacing the sensor. If comes down to it getting a new pump, what is the difference between the two products that i have linked.

3. NO SHIT SHERLOCK! That's why I created this thread. If you have any advice on how to diagnosis this issue, PLEASE share. Otherwise what was the point of your post?

If you have nothing to share that would be helpful to myself and to other members of this forum (who may come across this issue in the future) please refrain from posting in this thread.

Great advice. Thanks!

If it comes down to replacing the pump, I wasn't sure if it was beneficial to do the first option, minus the gaskets.

First thing I would want to do is datalog to see what the pressure is actually doing. If you're actually seeing a dip in pressure when going hard throttle, then you should be able to rule out sensor. Based on when it is happening it sounds like a common HPFP issue though.

This is why every BMW owner should just pony up the 30$ and get a diagnostic cable. Would give you a lot of information prior to posting a thread about it. The 30$ is worth it just for the possibility of not getting any ignorant DB replies from certain people.
