Dealer charges higher Fee for Check engine light diagnostics for Diesels?
 

Dealer initially told me Check Engine light diagnostic fee was $149..
When they found out it was a diesel it went up to $299 (double, nice)..

Anyone else come across this BS?

Nope.

Not surprised. I don't think they want to deal with the hassle of the odd ball diesel. They completely misdiagnosed my issue saying I needed a new $7k transfer case when my E70 was clearly 5 years behind on its i-level software. Without a scanner, I would have been in the dark. You need to get one.

Amen in to that! For less than $299 you can own your own scan tool and be armed with more information when you have to take your X to the dealer [emoji106]

Many of the guys here use the Foxwell NT520 - GREAT scanner!

Yes, I really need to. Every time I start looking into what to get though I end up in analysis paralysis.. :dunno:

Want to be able to read codes, and program things like turning off the fog lamps that come on with a turn of the wheel, and other annoying things as well..

ISTA is probably the way I need to go, then I need to get a laptop, been drawn into the world of tablets for portable computing as of late. I may have an old laptop on the shelf somewhere, wonder if it will even boot.. LOL!

I totally get it, way too many solutions to wade through and nothing does everything...

With regard to the scanner, you can save a whole lot of energy in reviewing them and just grab yourself a Foxwell NT520 and get on to loving life again [emoji16]. - it is an awesome scanner and over all awesome (almost required) tool to have as an X5 owner.

It really does a little bit of everything- except coding your car, I’ve used mine for a million things and to the best of my knowledge (or Ive totally missed it) It won’t turn your fog lights on with your high beams per say but it will allow you to do some prey amazing diagnostic and break-fix work!

With regard to “coding” if you’re looking for simple and effective, easy to use, look at Carly for BMW.

Haven’t personally used it, but I did some significant research before deciding to go with BMW Scanner 1.04... tiny bit more complex.

Classic paralysis there.... you know you need something...but you want the power of ISTA....but then...

Dropped my 2012 off for fault Code: 004BAC "Reductant tank active Fuellstandssensor, Signal" as well two recalls (airbag and idler pulley bolt). The dealer informed me it was a $390 diagnostic fee! Luckily the active tank and as replaced under extended warranty so I didn't have to end up paying the fee. They also mentioned it may take up to 4 days for the "diesel mechanic" to be able to look at it. Sounds to me like they don't want to deal with their diesel cars anymore....
