Should I buy E70 Single or Twin Turbo model
 

I am looking to upgrade from my 2005 E53 Turbo Diesel and would like a turbo diesel E70, prefer a Twin Turbo for the extra power and they don't seem to cost much more, although should I be concerned with any extra problems. I would also like the extra power for towing my 18 foot Bowrider boat. Not that a single turbo 3 liter has any issues. Any feed back is appreciated. live in Sydney btw gets some hot days in summer 40c or 100F plus some days, in case it creates an issue?

I had the same question last year...i went for the single turbo, less things that can go wrong. That s my opinion.

In the US, we only got one diesel E70 X5 and it has the twin Borg-Warner turbochargers. E70s in other markets were offered with a single Garrett turbo. I think the F15 went back to a single turbo. That's probably the last diesel X5 thanks to VW and the hand-wringers.

I just didnt think you had a choice- in any one country- of say a 2012 single turbo diesel or a 2012 dual turbo diesel....


There are a ton of things that will trip you up on a E70.... dual vs single seems way down in the weeds. But to be very honest, I have only a vague understanding of the Oz models

I can only speak to the US twin turbo version but on my 2009 I had over 220k miles and never had any issues with the turbo's so I think it's a moot point really. Glow plugs, injectors and hoses are about the only thing that fails on that engine.

We went for a twin turbo, much faster and makes the car perform much better at motorway speeds, these feel like absolute freight trains sometimes. I have read that the single turbo engine feels slightly more strain due to dealing with the cars weight through one turbo only, which can lead to accelerated wear. It generally isn't an issue, but with two turbos the share of boost amongst them means that they wear less easily.

That being said, that rarely is the case, you only hear bad things on the internet. Realistically, the MPG difference is marginal, you will only be seeing 23-25mpg average anyway, so why not have the extra turbo?

I went with the twin turbo...but then added a third. If two is good, then three is better!

Thinking about a 4th. Mo is betta.
